Do You Remember This Song

Introduction

This book is a collection of songs that I have gathered over my lifetime. Some from my youth and some from later years. In some cases I have written the words from listening to recordings and others were given to me by people that had also transcribed them from records and song books. Diane Labelle gave me her hand written song book years back and I copied them here.
Another source was a website called Cowpie Song Corral. This is a collection of songs contributed by people and made available by Cowpie. The address is:
http://www.roughstock.com/cowpie/songs/

In recent years radio stations have been playing newer music and this old music is being forgotten. I think it should be kept alive and this is my way of doing that. There are probably copyrights on many of these songs but since I am not profiting from this publication, I feel I am not infringing on this copyright. They are for the enjoyment of my friends.
Whenever I could the name of the author and singer have been included. Since many of these songs have been recorded by several people, you may remember them being recorded by someone other than the person mentioned here.
I hope you enjoy singing along with the songs you find here.

Update:

March 3,2007
Recently a new radio station has started broadcasting in our area. It is called Valley Heritage Radio at 98.7 FM, CJHR. They are located near Renfrew, Ontario and they are playing the oldies, fiddle tunes, bluegrass and many local entertainers. They have done their homework and have dug up some of the old country music most people have forgotten. It's great and that station is my new listening preference.
I have glued my radio to 98.7 FM.

Written by -
Recorded by - Bobby Bare
Chords - G

I'm five hundred miles away from home.

Teardrops fell on mama's note,
When I read the things she wrote,
She said, "We miss you son, we love you, come on home".
Well I didn't have to pack, I had it all right on my back,
Now I'm five hundred miles away from home.

Chorus:
Away from home, away from home,
Cold and tired and all alone.
Yes I'm five hundred miles away from home.

Spoken:
I know this is the same coat,
I took when I left home.
But it sure looks different now,
And I guess I look different too.
But time changes everything.
I wonder what they'll say,
When they see their boy lookin' this way.
Sung:
Oh, I wonder what they'll say when I get home.

Can't remember when I ate, it's just thumb and walk and wait.
And I'm still five hundred miles away from home.
If my love had been just right, I'd be with them all tonight.
But I'm still five hundred miles away from home.

Chorus:

Oh, I'm still 500 miles away from home.

A Fool Such As I

Written by -
Recorded by - Hank Snow
Chords -

Pardon me, if I'm sentimental when we say goodbye,
Don't be angry with me should I cry.
Though you're gone, yet I'll dream a little dream as years go by
Now and then, there's a fool such as I.

Chorus:
Now and then, there's a fool such as I am over you,
You taught me how to love and now, you say that we are through.
I'm a fool, but I'll love you dear until the day I die,
Now and then there's a fool such as I.

Abalene

Written by -
Recorded by - George Hamilton IV
Chords - C

Chorus:
Abalene, Abalene,
Prettiest town I've ever seen,
Women there don't treat you mean,
In Abalene, my Abalene.

Crowded city, ain't nothin' free,
Nothin' in this town for me.
Wish to the lord that I could be,
In Abalene, my Abalene.

Chorus:

I sit alone most every night,
Watch those trains pull out of sight,
Don't I wish they were carryin' me,
Back to Abalene my Abalene.

Chorus:

Above and Beyond

Written by - Harlan Howard
Recorded by -
Chords - A

Chorus:
Well I'll give you love, that's above, and beyond the call of love,
And I'll never ever make you cry.
Well I'll give you love, that's above, and beyond the call of love,
And love's something, that money can't buy.

Well a poor boys chances, of a pretty girls glances,
Are sometimes very few.
Though I've got no money, if you'll be my honey,
Here's what I'll offer you.

Chorus:

We met by chance, and I knew at a glance,
That I'd found my destiny.
Now I want to carry you, off and marry you,
If you will agree.

Chorus:

Act Naturally

Written by -
Recorded by - Buck Owens
Chords -

They're gonna put me in the movies,
They're gonna make a big star out of me,
We'll make a film about a man that's sad and lonely,
And all I've got to do is act naturally.

Well I bet you I'm gonna be a big star,
Might win an oscar you can't never tell,
The movies are gonna make me a big star,
'Cause I can play the part so well.

Well I hope you come to see me in the movies,
And then I know that you would plainly see,
The biggest fool that ever hit the big time,
And all I've got to do is act naturally.

Well I bet you I'm gonna be a big star,
Might win an oscar you can't never tell,
The movies are gonna make me a big star,
Cause I can play the part so well.

We'll make a film about a man that's sad and lonely,
And begging down upon his bended knees,
I'll play the part but I won't need rehersing,
'Cause all I've got to do is act naturally.

Well I bet you I'm gonna be a big star,
Might win an oscar you can't never tell,
The movies are gonna make me a big star,
'Cause I can play the part so well.

Well I hope you come to see me in the movies,
Then I know that you will plainly see,
The biggest fool that ever hit the big time,
And all I've got to do is act naturally.

Ain't Ever Satisfied

Written by -
Recorded by - Steve Earl
Chords - G Em C D

I was born by the railroad tracks,
The train whistle wailed and I wailed right back,
My Papa left me when I was quite young,
He said one of these days your gonna follow me son.

Oh oh oh oh oh oh,
I ain't ever satisfied,
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh,
I ain't ever satisfied.

Well I had me a woman she was my world,
But she went and ran off with my back street girl,
Well my back street woman could not be true,
She left me standing on the boulevard thinking of you.

Chorus
I got this empty feeling deep inside,
I'm going back to the other side ...... same as starting,

Last night I dreamed I made it to the promised land,
I was standing at the gate with the key in my hand,
Saint Peter said come in boy your finally home,
I said no thanks Pete I'll just be moving along.

Chorus 3 times.

All I Ever Give Is In

Written by -
Recorded by -
Chords -

You give me the devil when my hair`s not fixed right,
And you give your opinion when my clothes fit too tight,
Then you give straight loving and on that I depend,
But all I ever give is in.

I`m always giving in and you always over rule,
At least that`s how it seems, but I love you, am I a fool?
When you have me in your arms, I know why I let you win,
But all I ever give is in.

You smile then show anger when the money gets thin,
Then you give me a lecture on the values again,
Then slowly you weaken and reach for my hand,
But all I ever give is in.

I`m always giving in and you always overrule,
At least that`s how it seems, but I love you, am I a fool?
When you take me in your arms, I know why I let you win,
But all I ever give is in.

All I Have To Offer You Is Me

Written by -
Recorded by - Charlie Pride
Chords - D

Before you take another step,
There's something you should know,
About the years ahead and how they'll be.
You'll be livin' in a world where roses hardly ever grow,
'Cause all I have to offer you is me.

Chorus:
There'll be no mansion waiting on the hill,
With crystal chandeliers,
And there'll be no fancy clothes for you to wear.
Everything I have is standing here,
In front of you to see,
All I have to offer you is me.

Sweetheart I give you all my love,
In every way I can,
But make sure that's what you want,
While you're still free,
The only gold I have for you,
Is in this wedding band,
All I have to offer you is me.

Chorus:

All I have to offer you is me.

All My Ex's Live In Texas

Written by -
Recorded by - George Strait
Chords - A

Chorus:
All my Ex's live in Texas,
And Texas is the place, I'd dearly love to be.
All my Ex's live in Texas,
And that's why I hang my hat in Tennessee.

Rosanna down in Texarkana, wanted me to push her broom.
Sweet Eileen's in Abalene, she thought I hung the moon.
And Allison in Galveston, somehow lost her sanity.
And Dimples who now lives in Temple's got the law lookin' for me.

Chorus:

I remember that ol' Rio River,
Where I learned to swim.
But it brings to mind, another time,
When I wore my welcome thin.
My transendental meditation, I go there each night.
But I always come back to myself, long before dayling.

Chorus:

All My Friends Are Gonna' Be Strangers

Written by -
Recorded by - Merle Haggard
Chords - C

Oh the love you promised would be mine forever.
I would have bet my bottom dollar on.
Well it sure turned out to be a short forever.
Just once I turned my back and you were gone.

Chorus:
From now on, all my friends are gonna' be strangers.
I'm all through, ever trusting anyone.
The only thing I can count on now is my fingers.
I was a fool, believing in you, now you are gone.

It amazes me, not knowing any better.
Than to think I had a love that would be true.
Well I should be taken out and tarred and feathered,
To have let myself be taken in by you.

Chorus:

Last:
I was a fool, believing in you, now you are gone.

All My Lovin'

Written by -
Recorded by - Beatles
Chords - Em A7 D Bm G C

Close your eyes and I'll kiss you, tomorrow I'll miss you,
Remember I'll always be true.
And while I'm away I'll write home every day,
And I'll send all my loving to you.

I'll pretend that I'm kissing, the lips that I'm missing,
And hope that my dreams will come true.
And while I'm away I'll write home every day,
And send all my loving to you.

Chorus:
All my lovin' I will send to you,
All my lovin', darlin' I'll be true.

Repeat first verse.

Chorus:

All my lovin', All my lovin', I will send to you.

All The Gold In California

Written by - Larry Gatlin
Recorded by - Larry Gatlin
Chords - F Bb C C7 C11

Chorus:
All the gold in California,
Is in a bank in the middle of Beverly Hills,
In somebody else's name,
So if your dreamin' about California,
It don't matter at all, where you've played before,
California's a brand new game.

Tryin' to be a hero,
Windin' up a zero,
Can scar a man forever,
Right down to your soul,
Living on the spotlight,
Can kill a man outright,
'Cause everything that glitters,
Is not gold.

Chorus:

Almost Like A Song

Written by -
Recorded by - Ronnie Milsap
Chords - D Em7 A G Gflat7

Once in every life, someone comes along,
And you came to me, it was almost like a song.
You were in my arms right where you belong,
And we were so in love, it was almost like a song.

January through September,
We had such a perfect year,
Then the flame became a dying ember,
All at once you weren't here.

Now my broken heart, cries for you each night,
And it's almost like a song, but it's much to sad to write.
Now my broken heart, cries for you each night,
And it's almost like a song, but it's much to sad to write.

Amanda

Written by -
Recorded by - Don Williams
Chords - A

I've held it all inward, Lord knows I've tried,
But it's an awful awakening in a country boy's life.
To look in the mirror, in total suprise,
At the hair on your shoulders and the age in your eyes.

Chorus:
Ama-a-a-nda, light of my life,
Fate should have made you a gentleman's wife,
Ama-a-a-nda, light of my life,
Fate should have made you a gentleman's wife.

It's a measure of people who don't understand,
The pleasure of life in a hillbilly band.
I got my first guitar when I was fourteen,
Now I'm crowdin' thirty and still wearin' jeans.

Amarillo By Mornin'

Written by -
Recorded by - George Strait
Chords - D, F#m, G, C, A7, Gm7

Amarillo by mornin' up from San Antone,
Everything that I got is just what I've got on,
When that sun is high in that Texas sky,
I'll be buckin' at the county fair.
Amarillo by morning, Amarillo I'll be there.

They took my saddle in Houston, broke my leg in Sante Fe.
Lost my wife and a girlfriend, somewhere along the way.
But I'll be lookin' for eight when they pull that gate,
And I hope that judge ain't blind.
Amalillo by mornin', Amarillo's on my mind.

Amirillo by mornin' up from San Antone.
Everything that I got, is just what I got on.
I ain't got a dime but what I got is mine,
I ain't rich but Lord I'm free.
Amarillo by mornin', Amarillo's where I'll be.
Amarillo by mornin', Amarillo's where I'll be.

Amazing Grace

This one is for Roy West.

Written by -
Recorded by -
Chords -

Amazing grace how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me,
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind but now I see.

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believed.

The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

Thru many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come.
'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

When we've been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise,
Than when we'd first begun.

An Old Log Cabin For Sale

Written by - J.W. Payte
Recorded by - Porter Wagoner Chords - A

While strolling along in the country,
Reveiwing the scenes new and old.
I found an old-fashioned log cabin,
So beautiful there to behold.
A stranger was standing in silence,
His eyes firmly fixed on the door,
My heart ached in pity to see him.
For these were the words that it bore.

Chorus:
And the sign read, "An old cabin for sale
An old oaken bucket and well.
Easy terms just keep a log on the fire,
And a light burning bright in the dell."
Many years an old couple did patiently look,
For their boy whose last promise did fail.
Now the old rockin'chair will be rocking no more,
There's an old log cabin for sale.

A welcome I read on the floor mat,
An old braided rug by the door.
The hands of an angel had made it,
With many a pray'r prayed before.
In an old rockin' chair, long she waited,
For one glimpse of him how she yearned.
And now he was standing in silence,
Too late, yes, too late he'd returned.

Chorus:

How long has it been since you've written,
A letter to mother and dad?
How long has it been since you've seen them?
Why don't you make their hearts glad.
Too soon will the old home be vacant,
A candle light gleaming no more.
Don't wait 'till too late to remember,
There may be a sign on the door.

Chorus:

There's no...place...like home.

Backside Of Thirty

Written by -
Recorded by - John Conlee
Chords -

Makin' money at thirty with a wife and a son.
Then a short five years later, it all comes undone.
She's gone back to mama with the boy by her side.
Now I'm wine drunk and runnin' with them on my mind.

Chorus:
I'm on the backside of thirty and back on my own.
An empty apartment don't feel like a home.
On the backside of thirty, the short side of time.
Back on the bottom with no will to climb.

It's dawn Monday mornin' and I just called in sick.
I skipped work last Friday to drink this month's rent.
And when my friends ask me I tell 'em I'm fine.
But my eyes tell the story that my lies can't hide.

Chorus:

Banks of the Ohio

Written by -
Recorded by -

Chords -

I asked my love, to take a walk,
Just to walk, a little way.
As we walked, along we talked,
All about, our wedding day.

Chorus:

And only say, that you'll be mine,
And our home, will happy be.
Down beside, where the waters flow,
Down by the banks, of the Ohio.

I took her by, her lily white hand,
Led her down, where the waters stand.
There I pushed, her in to drown,
And I watched, as she floated down.

I started home, 'tween twelve and one,
I cried, "My God, what have I done".
I murdered the only woman I loved,
Because she would, not marry me.

The very next day, 'bout half past four,
The sheriff came, knocking on my door.
He said, "Young man, come with me go,
Down to the banks, of the Ohio.

Beautiful Lies

Written by -
Recorded by - Jean Shepard

Chords -

Chorus:
Beautiful lies, beautiful lies,
Each word is a heartache.
In perfect disguise.
I can't help but listen,
And then I realize,
The words you have spoken,
Are beautiful lies.

Call me a dreamer in a fool's paradise,
My heart knows no difference at love it's unwise.
Tell me you love me and will ‘till I die,
Like music you thrill me with beautiful lies.

I hear wedding bells ringing, I have stars in my eyes,
I see red roses blooming, a rainbow in the sky.
All sweet things come to me in the twinkle of an eye,
When you hold me and tell me those beautiful lies.

Bed Of Rose's

Written by -
Recorded by - Statler Brothers

Chords - A

She was called a scarlet woman by the people,
Who would go to church, but left me in the street.
With no kinfolk of my own, I never had a home,
And an eighteen year old boy has got to eat.

She found me outside one Sunday morning,
Begging money from a man I didn't know,
She took me in and wiped away my childhood,
A woman of the streets, that lady Rose.

Chorus:
This bed of Rose's that I lay on,
Where I was taught to be a man,
This bed of Rose's that I live in,
Is the only kind of life I understand.

She was a handsome woman, just forty-five,
Who was spoken to in town by very few,
She managed a late evening business,
Like most of the town wished they could do.
Well I learned all the things that a man should know,
From a woman not approved of I suppose,
But she died knowing that I really loved her,
From life's bramble bush I picked a rose.

Chorus:

Well I learned how to walk
And I learned how to run
In Bakersfield

I should of done time over things I done
In Bakersfield

I tasted my first taste of romance
In Bakersfield

I learned how to fight and I learned how to dance
In Bakersfield

(Chorus)
Dancin' on Beer Can Hill
Overlookin' Bakersfield
Rememberin' my first thrill
Dancin' on Beer Can Hill

I made part of my livin' in a honky-tonk bar
In Bakersfield

I picked a little cotton and a lotta guitar
In Bakersfield

Well you could do better but you won't do bad
In Bakersfield

Slow Dancin' out here is sort of a fad
In Bakersfield

(Chorus)

I drank a lotta beer 'cause I was a kid
In Bakersfield

Did a little time over things I did

Ten years later made me man of the year

Now I'm duckin' and dodgin' and dancin' out here

Between An Old Memory and Me

Written by - Charlie Craig, Keith Stegall
Recorded by - Keith Whitley

Chords - E

I was sitting at a table in a little club downtown
Playing songs on the jukebox and pouring whiskey down
When I heard a sweet voice saying, would you like some company
And I had to tell her, this is just between an old memory and me.

All my friends tell me I'm a fool for holding on
I know they're trying to help me, but I've been a fool to long
I don't want to talk about it so why can't they just let me be
This is just between an old memory and me

I'm not hurting anybody as far as I can see
I just need to be alone sometime
While she goes walking through my mind.

I don't want to talk about it
So why can't everybody see
This is just between an old memory and me
This is just between her memory and me. **************************************************************************************

Big City

Written by - Merle Haggard & Dean Holloway
Recorded by - Merle Haggard

Chords - D

I'm tired of this dirty old city.
And I'm tired of too much work and never enough play.
And I'm tired ot these dirty old sidewalks.
Think I'll walk off my steady job today.

Chorus:
Turn me loose, set me free, somewhere in the middle of Montanna.
Gimme all I got comin' to me,
And keep your retirement and your so called social security.
Big city turn me loose and set me free.

Been working everyday since I was twenty.
Haven't got a thing to show, for anything I've done.
theres's folks who never work and they've got plenty.
Think it's time guys like me had some fun.

Blackboard Of My Heart

Written by - Lyle Gaston and Hank Thompson
Recorded by - Hank Thompson

Chords - G

When I was young and went to school they taught me how to write,
To take the chalk and make a mark and hope it turns out right,
So that's the way it is with love and what you did to me,
I wrote it so you'd know that I was yours eternally.

But my tears have washed I love you from the blackboard of my heart,
It's too late to clean the slate and make another start,
I'm satisfied the way things are although we're far apart,
My tears have washed I love you from the blackboard of my heart.

If you'd been true the way you should and not have gone astray,
These tears would not have fallen down and washed the words away,
No need to talk for if the chalk should write these words again,
It will be for someone else not things that might have been.

But my tears have washed I love you from the blackboard of my heart,
It's too late to clean the slate and make another start,
I'm satisfied the way things are although we're far apart,
My tears have washed I love you from the blackboard of my heart.

Blue Eyes Cryin' In the Rain

Written by - Fred Rose
Recorded by - Willie Nelson

Chords - E

In the twilights glow I see her,
Blue eyes cryin'in the rain.
When we kissed good-bye and parted,
I knew we'd never meet again.

Love is like a dying ember,
Only memories remain.
And through the ages I'll remember,
Blue eyes cryin' in the rain.

Someday when we meet up yonder,
We'll stroll hand in hand again.
In the land that know no parting,
Blue eyes cryin' in the rain.
Blue eyes cryin' in the rain.

Blue Moon of Kentucky

Written by - Bill Monroe 1947
Recorded by - Bill Monroe

Chords - G

Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shinin',
Shine on the one who's gone and proved untrue.
Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shinin',
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue.

It was on a moonlit night,
The stars were shinin' bright,
An' they whispered from on high,
Yo' love has said goodbye.
Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shinin',
Shine on the one that's gone and said goodbye.

Instrumental:

Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shinin',
Shine on the one that's gone and proved untrue.
Blue moon of Kentucky, keep on shinin',
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue.

Instrumental:

It was on a moonlit night,
The stars were shining bright.
An' they whispered from on high,
Yo' love has said goodbye.
Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shinin',
Shine on the one that's gone and said goodbye.

----------------------------------------------

"Back in those days, it seems every trip we made was from Kentucky to Florida driving back and forth. I always thought about Kentucky, and I wanted to write a song about the moon we could always see over it. The best way to do this was to bring a girl into the song. I wanted words to this, because most of my songs were instrumentals. "Kentucky Waltz" had come earlier and I knew I could write both words and music, so I wrote it in the car on the way home from one of those Florida trips."

Blue Ridge Mountain Blues

Written by -
Recorded by -

Chords -

When I was young, and in my prime,
I left my home, in Caroline.
Now all I do, is sit and pine,
For all those folks, I left behind.

I've got those Blue Ridge Mountain blues,
And I stand right here to say,
My grip is packed to travel, and I'm scratchin' gravel,
For that Blue Ridge far away.

Well I'm gonna stay right by my Pa,
And I'm gonna do right by my Ma.
I'll hang around the cabin door,
No work or worry anymore.

I've got those Blue Ridge Mountain blues,
Gonna see my old dog trained,
Gonna hunt the possum, where the corn tops blossom,
On that Blue Ridge far away.

Now I see a window with a light,
I see two heads of snowy white.
It seems I hear them both recite,
Where is my wandering boy tonight?

I've got those Blue Ridge Mountain blues,
And I stand right here to say.
Every day I'm counting 'til I find that mountain,
On that Blue Ridge far away.

Blue Side Of Lonesome

Chords -

I'm calling to tell you it's over,
Yes darling your now free to go,
Your saying your sorry you hurt me,
But you hurt me much more than you know.

Your asking me where this call comes from,
Oh I hope that you won't then appear,
If you're new romance turns out a failure,
Here's where to find me my dear.

I'm just on the blue side of lonesome,
Right next to the heartbreak hotel,
In a tavern thats known as three teardrops,
On a bar stool no doing so well.

The floor has a carpet of sorrow,
But no one can weep in the aisle,
They say someone broke the bar mirror,
With only a ghost of a smile.

The hands on the clock never alter,
For things never change in this place,
There's no present no past and no future,
We're the ones who have lost in love's race.

I'm just on the blue side of lonesome,
Right next to the heartbreak hotel,
In a tavern that's known as three teardrops,
On a bar stool not doing so well.

Born To Lose

Written by - Johnny Cash
Recorded by - Johnny Cash

Chords - G

Born to lose, I've lived my life in vain.
Ev'ry dream has only brought me pain.
All my life I've always been so blue.
Born to lose, and now I'm losing you.

Born to lose, it seems so hard to bear.
How I long to always have you near.
You've grown tired, and now you say we're through.
Born to lose, and now I'm losing you.

Born to lose, my every hope is gone.
It's so hard to face that empty dawn.
You were all the happiness I knew.
Born to lose, and now I'm losing you.

There's no use to dream of happiness.
All I see is only loneliness.
All my life I've always been so blue.
Born to lose, and now I'm losing you.

Bouquet of Roses

Written by -
Recorded by -

Chords - C

I'm sending you a big bouquet of roses,
One for every time you broke my heart,
And as the door of love between us closes,
Tears will fall like petals when we part.

Chorus: 1
I begged you to be different but you'll always untrue
I'm tired of forgiving now there's nothing left to do,
So I'm sending you a big boquet of roses,
One for everytime you broke my heart.

You made our lover's lane a road of sorrow,
'Til at last I had to say goodbye.
Now I walk alone to face each sad tomorrow,
Teardrops falling freely from my eyes.

Chorus: 2
I know that I should hate you after all you've put me through,
But how can I be bitter, when I'm still in love with you.
So I'm sending you a bit bouquet of roses,
One for every time you broke my heart.

Bringing Mary Home

Written by -
Recorded by -

Chords - D

I was driving down a lonely road on a dark and stormy night,
When a little girl by the road side showed up in my headlights,
I stopped and she got in the back and in a shaky tone,
She said, "My name is Mary, please won't you take me home".

She must have been so frightened all alone there in the night.
There was something strange about her 'cause her face was deathly white,
She sat so pale and quiet in the back seat all alone,
I never will forget the night that I took Mary home.

I pulled into the drive way where she told me to go,
Got out to help her from the car and opened up the door,
But I just could not believe my eyes, the back seat was bare,
I looked all around the car but Mary wasn't there.

A light shone from the porch, a lady opened up the door,
I asked about the little girl that I was looking for,
The lady gently smiled at me and brushed a tear away,
She said, "It sure was nice of you to go out of your way".

But thirteen years ago tonight in a wreck just down the road,
Our darling Mary lost her life, and we miss her so,
Oh thank you for your trouble and the kindness you have shown,
You're the thirteenth one that's been here,
Bringing Mary Home.

Brotherly Love

Written by -
Recorded by - Keith Whitley & Earl Thomas Connelly

Chords - G

We share the same last name and the same colour eyes,
But we fought like tigers over that old red bike,
I'm battin' first and you can't use my glove,
It wouldn't take long until push came to shove,
But we looked out for each other with brotherly love.

You had no girls 'till I had my first date,
I brought her home from the movies you stayed up late,
Three on the couch watchin' tv,
I was smilin at her while you were laughin' at me,
But I wouldn't trade it for nothin' brotherly love.

There's a bond that brothers know,
And it gets stronger as they grow,
A love that time and miles can't come between,
We disagreed but in the end there never would be two closer friends,
And brotherly love is somethin' we all need

They share the same last name and the same colour eyes,
But they fight like tigers over one old red bike,
And lookin' at them reminds me of us,
There gonna fight and there gonna fuss,
But they've got somethin' special it's brotherly love,
Ya they've got somethin' special it's brotherly love.

Bud The Spud

Recorded by - Stompin' Tom Conners
Chords - E

It's Bud the spud from the bright red mud.
Rollin' down the highway smilin'.
The spuds are big on the back of Bud's rig.
And they're from Prince Edward Island.
They're from Prince Edward Island.

Now from Charlottetown or from Summerside
They load 'em down for the big long ride.
He jumps in the cab & he's off with the prize sebbegos.
He's gotta catch that boat to make it on time.
Then he heads her up that old New Brunswick line.
To Montreal he comes just a flyin'.
With another big load of potatoes.

Spoken:
Now the Ontario Provincial Police don't think much of Bud.

Yeah the cops have been lookin for the son of a gun.
That's been rippin the tar off the 401.
They know the name of the truck shines up in the sun... Green Gables.
And he hits Toronto at seven o'clock.
And he backs her up agin' the terminal dock.
And the boys gather 'round just to hear him talk.
About another big load of potatoes.

Now I know a lotta’ people from East to West.
That like the spuds from the island best.
'Cause they'll stand up to the hardest test.
Right on the table.
So when you see that big truck come a rollin' by.
Wave your hand & kinda wink your eye.
'Cause that's Bud the Spud from old P.E.I.
With another big load of potatoes.

It's Bud the Spud from the bright red mud Rollin' down the highway smilin'. Because he's got another big load.
Of the best doggone potatoes.
That's ever been growed .
And they're from Prince Edward Island,
And they're from Prince Edward Island.

Candy kisses wrapped in paper
Mean more to you than any of mine
Candy kisses wrapped in paper
You'd rather have them
any old time

You don't mean it when you whisper
Those sweet love words in my ear
Candy kisses wrapped in paper
Mean more to you than mine do dear.

I built a castle out of dreams, dear
I thought that you were building, too
Now my castles all have fallen
And I am left alone and blue.
Once my heart was filled with gladness
Now there's sadness, only tears
Candy kisses, wrapped in paper
Mean more to you than mine do dear. **************************************************************************************

Carroll County Accident

Written by -
Recorded by - Porter Wagoneer
Chords - G

Carroll County's pointed out as kind of square,
The biggest thing that happens is the county fair,
I guess that's why we thought it such a big event,
What we all call the Carroll County accident.

The wreck was on the highway just outside the line,
Walter Browning lost his life and for a time,
It seemed that Mary Ellen Jones would surely die,
But she lived long enough for her to testify.

Walter Browning was a happy married man,
And he wore a golden wedding ring upon his hand,
But it was gone, nobody knew just where it went,
He lost it in the Carroll County accident.

Mary Ellen testified he flagged her down,
Said he was sick and could she drive him into town,
No one ever doubted what she said was true,
'Cause she was well respected in the county too.

I went down to see the wreck like all the rest,
The broken glass the bloody seats the tangled mess,
But I found something no one else had ever seen,
Behind the dash in Mary's crumpled up machine.

A little match box circled by a rubber band,
And inside the ring from Walter Browning's hand,
It took a while to figure out just what it meant,
The truth about the Carroll County accident.

By dark of night I dropped the ring into a well,
And took a sacred oath that I would never tell,
The truth about the Carroll County accident,
For the county ordered dad a marble monument.

Yes I lost him in the Carroll County accident.

City Of New Orleans

Chords - G
Recorded by - Willie Nelson

Ridin' on the City of New Orleans,
Illinois Central Monday mornin' rail,
Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders,
Three conductors, twenty-five sacks of mail.

All along the southbound Odyssee,
The train pulls out of Kankakee,
And rolls along past houses, farms and fields,
Passing trains that have no names,
And graveyards full of old black men,
And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles.

Good morning America, how are you?
Say don't you know me I'm your native son,
I'm the train they call the City of New Orleans,
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.

Dealin' card games with the old man in the club car,
Penny a point ain't no one keepin' score,
Pass the paper bag that holds the bottle,
Feel the wheels rumblin' 'neith the floor.

And the sons of pullman porters,
And the sons of engineers,
Ride their fathers magic carpets made of steel,
Mothers with their babes asleep,
Are rockin' to the gentle beat,
And the rythmn of the rails is all they feel.

Operator please connect me to 1982,

I sure do need to tell her that I thought the whole thing through,
And now it's clear that she is what I should have held on to.

Chorus

They say hindsights 20/20 but I'm nearly going blind,
From starrin' at her photograph and wishing she was mine.
It's that same old lost love story, it's sad but it's true,
There was a time when she was mine in 1982.

Postman can you sell me a special kind of stamp,
One to send a letter from this crazy lonely man.
Back into the waisted years of my living past,
I need to tell her now I know how long our love will last.

Almost heaven, West Virginia,
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shandoah River.
Life is old there, older than the trees,
Younger than the mountains growin' like a breeze.

Chorus:

Country Roads, take me home,
To the place I belong,
West Virginia, mountain momma,
Take me home, country roads.

All my memories gather round her,
Miners lady, stranger to blue water.
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky,
Misty taste of moonshine, tear drop in my eye.

Chorus:

I hear a voice, in the mornin' hours she calls me,
Radio reminds me of my home far away,
And drivin' down the road I get a feelin',
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday.

Chorus:

Country roads, take me home,
To the place I belong,
West Virginia, mountain momma,
Take me home, country roads, take me home,
Country roads, take me home, Country roads.

Crying In The Chapel

Written by - Artie Glenn
Recorded by -

Chords - F6

You saw me crying in the chapel,
The tears I shed were tears of joy;
I know the meaning of contentment,
Now I am happy with the Lord.

Just a plain and simple chapel,
Where humble people go to pray,
I pray the Lord that I`ll grow stronger,
As I live from day to day.

I`ve searched and I`ve searched, but I couldn`t find,
No way on earth to gain peace of mind.
Now I`m happy in the chapel,
Where people are of one accord,
We gather in the chapel,
Just to sing and praise the Lord.

You saw me crying in the chapel,
The tears I shed were tears of joy.

Crystal Chandelier

Written by -
Recorded by - Charlie Pride

Chords - A

Chorus:
Oh the crystal chandelier lights up the paintings on your wall,
The marble statuettes are standing stately in the hall,
But will the timely crowd that has you laughing loud,
Help you dry your tears,
When the new wears off of your crystal chandelier.

Verse 1:
I never did fit in too well with the folks you knew,
And it's plain to see that the likes of me don't fit with you,
So you traded me for the gaiety of the well to do,
And you turned away from the love I offered you.0

Chorus:

Repeat Verse 1:

I see your picture in the news most every day,
You're the chosen girl of the social world,
So the stories say,
But a paper smile only lasts a while,
Then it fades away,
And the love we knew will come home to you some day.

Delta dawn, whats that flower you have on?
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by?
And did I hear you say he was a'meetin' you here today?
To take you to his mansion in the sky.

She's forty one and her daddy still calls her baby,
All the folks around Brownsville say she's crazy,
'Cause she walks around town with a suitcase in her hand,
Lookin' for a mysterious dark haired man.

I dreamed about the girl who's been waitin for so long.

Chorus:

Home folks think I'm big in Detroit City,
By the letters that I write they think I'm fine,
But by day I make the cars,

If only they could read between the lines.

Chorus:

And after all this time I find I've just been wasting my time,
So I think I'll take my foolish pride,

I left waiting so far behind.

Did She Mention My Name

Written by - Gordon Lightfoot
Recorded by - Gordon Lightfoot

Chords - G C Am D D7 Em Em7

It's so nice to meet an old friend and pass the time of day,
And talk about the hometown a million miles away,
Is the ice still in the river, are the old folks still the same?
And by the way, did she mention my name?
Did she mention my name just in passing?
And lookling at the rain do you remember,
If she dropped a name or two?
Is the home team still on fire?
Do they still win all the games?
And by the way did she mention my name?

Is the landlord still a loser?
Do his signs hang in the hall?
Are the young girls still as pretty in the city in the fall?
Does the laughter on their faces still put the sun to shame?
And by the way, did she mention my name?
Did she mention my name just in passing?
And when the talk ran high did the look in her eye seem far away?
Is the old roof still leaking when the late snow turns to rain?
And by the way, did she mention my name?
Did she mention my name just in passing?
And looking at the rain do you remember if she dropped a name or two?
Won't you say hello from someone?
There'll be no need to explain,
And by the way, did she mention my name?

Diggin' Up Bones

Written by -
Recorded by - Randy Travis

Chords - D

Last night I dug your picture out from our old dresser drawer,
I sat it on the table and I talked to it 'til four,
I read some ol' love letters right up 'til the break of dawn,
Yah tonight I'm sittin' alone and diggin' up bones.

I went through the jewellery and I found our wedding rings,
I put mine on my finger and I gave yours a fling,
Across this lonely bedroom of our recent broken home,
Yah tonight I'm sittin' alone and diggin' up bones.

Chorus:
I'm diggin' up bones, I'm diggin' up bones,
Exhumin' things that's better left alone,
I'm resurrecting memories of a love that's dead and gone,
Yah tonight I'm sittin' alone and diggin' up bones.

I went through the closet and I found some things in there,
Like that pretty negligee that I bought you to wear,
I recalled how good you looked each time you had it on,
Yah tonight I'm sittin' alone and diggin' up bones.

Chords -

Does my ring hurt your finger,
When you go out at night,
When I bought it for you darlin',
It seemed to fit just right,
Should I take it to the jeweller,
So it won't fit so tight,
Does my ring hurt your finger,
When you go out at night.

Did you enjoy yourself last night dear how was the show,
You know that I don't mind it when you go,
I understand sometimes we all need time alone,
But why do you always leave your ring at home.

Does my ring hurt your finger,
When your away from me,
I'm so proud when you wear it,
For all the world to see,
Should I take it to the jeweller,
So it won't fit so tight,
Does my ring hurt your finger,
When you go out at night.

Doin' My Time

On this old rock pile, with a ball and chain,
They call me by a number not a name Lord, Lord,
I've gotta do my time, I've gotta do my time,
With an achin' heart and a worried mind.

When that old judge, looked down and smiled,
Said I'll put you up that railroad for a while, Lord, Lord,
I've gotta do my time, I've gotta do my time,
With an achin' heart and a worried mind.

You can hear my hammer, you can hear my song,
Gonna swing it like John Henry all day long, Lord, Lord,
I gotta do my time, I gotta do my time,
With an achin' heart and a worried mind.

Well now it won't be long, just a few more days,
I'll settle down and quit my rowdy ways, Lord, Lord,
With that gal of mine, ya with that gal of mine,
She's waitin' for me, while I've done my time.

And I jokingly said come and be my bride,
Now time has turned the pages it's the sweetest joke on earth,
That I have you dear forever by my side.

Chorus:

Maybe some day your gonna hurt me,

With all my heart and soul,
And pray God to let it last if it's his will.

I'm drinkin' champagne feelin' no pain till early mornin',
Dining and dancin' with every pretty girl I can find,
I'm having a fling with a pretty young thing till early mornin',
Knowing tomorrow I'll wake up with you on my mind.

Guilty concience I guess, 'tho I must confess,
I never loved you much when you were mine.

So I'll keep drinkin' champagne feelin' no pain 'till early mornin',
Dining and dancin' with every pretty girl I can find,
Havin' a fling with a pretty young thing 'till early mornin',
Knowing tomorrow I'll wake up with you on my mind.

Guilty concience I guess, 'tho I must confess
I never loved you much when you were mine.

So I'll keep drinkin' champagne feelin' no pain 'till early mornin',
Dining and dancin'with every pretty girl I can find,
I'll keep havin' a fling with a pretty young thing 'till early mornin',
Knowin' tomorrow I'll wake up with you on my mind.

Five Days A Week

Chords -

Five days a week all week long,
I work my fingers to the bone,
And if I get laid off another job I'll seek,
I work all I can five days a week.

Five days a week eight hours a day,
And then the weekend's mine and,
I can blow my mind or kneel and pray.
When I was just fifteen,
I had to earn my keep,
Cause I'm a blue collar man,
I work all I can five days a week.

Five days a week feel good or not,
From eight to five I come alive I give it all I got,
Free life ain't free you got to earn your keep,
If your a blue collar man,
You work all you can five days a week.

Flowers On The Wall

Written by -
Recorded by - Statler Brothers

Chords - C

I keep hearin' you're concerned about my happiness.
But all that thought you've given me is conscience I guess.
If I were walkin' in your shoes, I wouldn't worry none.
While you and your friends are worryin' 'bout me, I'm havin'lots of fun.

Chorus:
Countin' flowers on the wall, that don't bother me at all,
Playin' solitaire 'til dawn, with a deck of fifty-one,
Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo,
Now don't tell me, I've nothin' to do.

Last night I dressed in tails, pretended I was on the town,
As long as I can dream it's hard to slow this swinger down.
So please don't give a thought to me, I'm really doin' fine,
You can always find me here and havin' quite a time.

Chorus:

It's good to see you, I must go, I know I look a fright,
Anyway, my eyes are not accustomed to this light,
And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete,
So I must go back to my roon and make my day complete.

Chorus:

Don't tell me, I've nothin' to do.

Forever And Ever Amen

Written by -
Recorded by - Randy Travis

Chords - D

You may think that I'm talkin' foolish,
You've heard that I'm wild and I'm free,
You may wonder how I can promise you now,
This love that I'm feelin' for you always will be,
Your not just time that I'm killing,
I'm no longer one of those guys,
As sure as I live this love that I give,
Is gonna be yours until the day that I die oh baby,

Chorus
I'm gonna love you forever, forever and ever Amen.
As long as old men sit and talk about the weather,
As long as old women sit and talk about old men.
If you wonder how long I'll be faithfull, I'll be happy to tell you again,
I'm gonna love you forever and ever, forever and ever Amen.

They say that time takes it's toll on a body,
Makes the young girls brown hair turn grey.
Ah but honey I don't care, I'm not in love with your hair,
And if it all fell out well I'd love you anyway.
They say that time can play tricks on a memory,
Make people forget things they knew,
But it's easy to see it's happenin' to me,
I've already forgotten every woman but you oh baby,

I'm gonna love you forever forever and ever Amen.
As long as old men sit and talk about the weather,
As long as old women sit and talk aabout old men.
If you wonder how long I'll be faithfull, just listen to how this song ends,
I'm gonna love you forever and ever,
Forever and ever forever and ever forever and ever Amen.

Forty Miles From Poplar Bluff

Written by - Frank Dycus & Larry Kingston
Recorded by - Porter Wagoneer

Chords - G

I never had a pair of shoes that weren't old hand me downs,
And daddy's mornin' coffee, came from old left over grounds,
My mama wore no jewelry, or any store bought stuff,
'Cause home was just a hillside, forty miles from Poplar bluff.

Chorus:
Forty miles back in Missouri,
There's a different way of life,
Where a man thinks of his neighbor,
And not his neighbor's wife.
Life is far from fancy, sometimes kind'a rough,
But contentment makes it worth it,
Forty miles from Poplar Bluff.

Our only family treasure was a beat up radio,
And it took us to the places, where we knew we'd never go,
We never had much money, but we always had enough,
'Cause money never mattered, forty miles from Poplar Bluff.

Chorus:

Well nearly every winter, when the snow was on the ground,
The roads would all be closed, and we couldn't get to town,
But if daddy had his terbacker, and grandma had her snuff,
Then the winters didn't matter, forty miles from Polar Bluff.

Chorus:

Forty miles, from Poplar Bluff.

Four Strong Winds

Written by - Ian Tyson
Recorded by - Ian Tyson

Chords - G Am D D7 C

Chorus:
Four strong winds that blow lonely,
Seven seas that run high,
All those things that don't change come what may,
But our good times are all gone and I'm bound for movin' on,
I'll look for you if I'm ever back this way.

I think I'll go out to Alberta, weather's good there in the fall,
I got some friends that I can go to workin' for,
Still I wish you'd change your mind if I asked you one more time,
But we've been through that a hundred times or more.

Chorus:

If I get there before the snow flies and if things are goin' good,
You could meet me if I sent you down the fare,
But by then it would be winter ain't too much for you to do,
And those winds sure can blow cold way out there.

Fox On The Run

Written by -
Recorded by - The Good Brothers

Chords - G

Chorus:
She walks through the corn, leadin' down to the river.
Her hair shone like gold, in the hot mornin' sun.
She took all the love, that a poor boy could give her
And left me to die, like a fox on the run.
Like a fox, (like a fox, like a fox) on the run.

Now everbody knows, the reason for the fall,
How woman tempted man, down in paradise's hall,
This woman tempted me, and took me for a ride,
Now like a weary fox, I need a place to hide.

Chorus:

We'll pour a glass of wine, to fortify our souls,
We'll talk about the world, and the friends we used to know,
I've seen a string of girls that put me on the floor,
The game is nearly over, and the hounds are at my door.

Fraulein

Written by - Lawton Williams

Chords - G

Far across the blue waters,
Lives an old German`s daughter,
By the banks of the old river Rhine,
Where I loved her and left her,
But I can`t for get her,
'Cause I miss my pretty Fraulein.

Fraulein, Fraulien,
Look up toward heaven,
Each night when the stars start to shine,
By the same stars above you,
I swear that I love you,
You are my pretty Fraulien.

When my memories wander,
A way over yonder,
To the sweetheart that I left behind,
In a moment of glory,
A face comes before me,
The face of my pretty Fraulien.

Fraulien, Fraulien,
Walk down by the river,
Pretend that your hands holding mine,
By the same stars above you,
I swear that I love you,
And I always will my Fraulien.

Friends In Low Places

Written by -
Recorded by - Garth Brooks

Chord -

Blame it all on my roots, I showed up in boots,
And ruined your black tie affair.
The last one to know, the last one to show,
I was the last one you thought you'd see there.

And I saw the surprise, and the fear in his eyes,
When I took his glass of chanpagne.
I toasted you, "Said honey we may be through,
But you'll never hear me complain."

Chorus:
'Cause I've got friends in low places,
Where the whiskey drowns and the beer chases,
My blues away, and I'll be okay.
I'm not big on social graces,
I think I'll step on out to the oasis,
'Cause I've got friends in low places.

Well I guess I was wrong, I just don't belong,
But hey, I've been there before,
Everything's alright, I'll just say goodnight,
And I'll show myself to the door.

Hey I didn't mean to cause a big scene,
Just give me an hour and then,
Wll I'll be as high as that ivory tower,
That you're livin'in.

Chorus: Twice

From A Jack To A King

Written by -
Recorded by - Jack Green

Chords -

From a jack to a king,
From loneliness to a wedding ring,
I played an ace and I won a queen,
And walked away with your heart.
From a jack to a king,
With no regrets I stacked the cards last night.
And lady luck played her hand just right,
To make me king of your heart.

For just a little while I thought that I might loose the game,
But just in time I saw the twinkle in your eye.

From a jack to a king,
From lonliness to a wedding ring.
I played an ace and I won a queen,
that made me king of your heart.

Games People Play

Written by - Joe South
Recorded by - Joe South

Chords -

Oh, the games people play now,
Ev'ry night and ev'ry day, now,
Never meanin' what they say, now,
Never sayin' what they mean,
And they while away the hours,
In their ivory towers,
'Til they're covered up with flowers,
In the back of a black limousine.

Chorus:
La, da, da, da, da, da, da,
La, da, da, da, da, da, dee,
Talkin' 'bout you and me,
And the games people play.

Oh, we make one another cry,
Break a heart then we say goodbye,
Cross our hearts and we hope to die,
That the other was to blame,
Neither one will ever give in,
So, we gaze at an eight by ten,
Think of how it might have been,
And it's a dirty rotten shame.

Geisha Girl

Written by - Lawton Williams
Recorded by - Hank Locklin

Chords - C

Have you ever heard a love song,
That you didn't understand.
Where you met her in a teahouse,
On the island of Japan.
And have you ever travelled,
Over many thousand miles.
Just to see a pretty geisha girl,
Dressed in oriental style.

Chorus:
They read it in the tea leaves,
And it's written in the sand.
I found love by the heart full,
In a foreign, distant land.
Tell the home folks that I'm happy,
With someone that's true I know,
I love a pretty geisha girl,
Where the ocean breezes blow.

I have stood and watched the sunrise,
From the waters of the sea.
And wondered how much beauty,
In this whole world can there be.
My dreams are all worth dreamin',
And it makes my life worthwhile,
To see my pretty geisha girl,
Dressed in oriental style.

Give My Love To Rose

Written by - Johnny Cash
Recorded by - Johnny Cash

Chords - D

I found him by the railroad track this morning.
I could see that he was nearly dead.
I knelt down beside him and I listened.
Just to hear the words the dying fellow said.
He said they let me out of prison down in Frisco.
For ten long years I've paid for what I've done.
I was trying to get back to Louisiana.
To see my Rose and get to know my son.

Chorus:

Give my love to Rose please won't you mister.
Take her all my money, tell her buy some pretty clothes.
Tell my boy that daddy's so proud of him.
And don't forget to give my love to Rose.

Tell them I said thanks for waiting for me.
Tell my boy to help his mom at home.
Tell my Rose to try to find another.
For it ain't right that she should live alone.
Mister here's a bag with all my money.
It won't last them long the way it goes.
God bless you, for finding me this morning.
And don't forget to give my love to Rose.

Good Hearted Woman

Written by -
Recorded by - Waylon Jennings

Chords - E A B7

A long time forgotten,
Are dreams that just fell by the way,
And the good life he promised,
Just ain't what she's living today,
But she never complains,
Of the bad times or the bad things he's done,
Lord she just talks about the good times,
They've had and all the good times to come.

Chorus:
She's a good hearted woman,
In love with a good timein' man,
She loves him in spite of his ways,
That she don't understand,
Through tear drops and laughter,
They'll pass through this world hand in hand,
A good hearted woman,
Lovein' her good timein' man.

He likes the bright lights,
The night life, and good timein' friends.
When the party's all over,
She'll welcome him back home again,
Lord knows she don't understand him,
But she does the best she can,
'Cause she's a good hearted woman,
And she loves her good timein' man.

Green Green Grass Of Home

Written by -
Recorded by -

Chords -

The old home town, looks the same,
As I step down, from the train,
And there to meet me, is my mama and papa.
Down the road I look, and there runs Mary,
Hair of gold, and lips like cherries,
It's good, to touch, the green, green grass of home.

The old house, is still standing,
Though the paint is cracked and dry.
There's the old oak tree, that I used to play on.
Down the lane I walk, with my sweet Mary,
Hair of gold, and lips like cherries,
It's good,to touch, the green, green grass of home.

Yes, they'll all, come to meet me,
Arms reaching, smiling sweetly,
It's good, to touch, the green, green grass of home.

Spoken:
Then I awake, and look aroung me,
At the four grey walls that surround me.
And I realize, that I was only dreaming.
For there's a guard, and there's a sad ol' padre,
Arm and arm, we'll walk at daybreak.
Again, I'll touch, the green, green grass of home.

Yes, they'll all, come, to see me,
In the shade, of that old oak tree,
As they lay me 'neath the green, green grass of home.
As they lay me 'neath the green, green grass of home.

Girl you taught me how to hurt real good,
And cry myself to sleep,
Showed me how to count shattered dreams,
Another lesson 'bout a nightly fool,
Who came to babble on,
Found out that I did not taste so good.

Chorus
Now it's guitar's and cadilacs and hillbilly music,
Lonely, lonely streets that I call home,
Ya my guitars and cadilacs and hillbilly music,
It's the only thing that keeps me hanging on.

There ain't no glamour in this tinsil,
And this lost forgotten life,
Painted scarves is all you left for me,
I ought to thank you girl for giving me,
Brand new ways to be cruel,
If I could find the mind,
Well I guess I'll just leave.

Have You Ever Been Lonely?

Written by -
Recorded by - Patsy Cline - Jim Reeves

Chords -

Two of a kind, everywhere I see,
Lovers in the moonlight, robins in a tree.
Now that we have parted,
What am I to do, but make this plea to you.

Chorus:
Have you ever been lonely?
Have you ever been blue?
Have you ever loved someone?
Just as I love you.
Can't you see that I'm sorry,
For each mistake I've made.
Can't you see that I've changed dear,
Can't you see that I've paid.
Be a little forgiving, take me back in your heart.
How can I go on living,
Now that we're apart,
If you knew what I've been through,
You would know why I ask you,
Have you ever been lonely?
Have you ever been blue?

My happiness, two alone can share,
Now that I have lost you,
Life is hard to bear,
You and I have quarreled, I'm a fool that's true.
Why can't we start anew?

Chorus:
Now I've got, heartaches by the number, troubles by the score,
Everyday you love me less, each day I love you more,
Yes, I've got heartaches by the number, a love that I can't win,
But the day that I stop countin', that's the day my world will end.

Heartache number one was when you left me,
I never knew that I could hurt this way,
And heartache number two was when you, came back again,
You came back but never meant to stay.

Chorus:

Heartache number three was when you called me,

Heartbreak Hotel

Chords - D

Since my baby left me,
Found new place to dwell,
Down at the end of lonely street,
At heartbreak hotel.

Oh I get so lonely baby,
I get so lonely,
I get so lonely I could die.

Though it`s always crowded,
Still can find some room,
Where those broken hearted lovers,
Cry away their gloom,

Oh I get so lonely baby,
I get so lonely,
I get so lonely I could die.

Bell hop`s tears keep flowing,
Deskclerk`s dressed in black,
They been so long on lonely street,
They ain`t never gon`come back,

Oh I get so lonely baby,
I get so lonely,
I get so lonely I could die.

If your baby leaves you,
And you have a tale to tell,
Just take a walk down lonely street,
To heartbreak hotel.

Oh I get so lonely baby,
I get so lonely,
I get so lonely I could die.

Bell hop`s tears keep flowing,
deskclerk`s dressed in black,
They been so long on lonely street,

Hello walls, how'd things go for you today,
Don't you miss her since she up and walked away,
And I bet you dread to spend another lonely night with me,
Lonely walls I'll keep you company.

Hello walls well I see that you are still here,
Aren't you lonely since our darlin' disappeared,
Well it appears there's a tear drop in the corner of your pane,
Now don't you try and tell me that its rain.

She went away and left us all alone the way she planned,
Guess we'll have to learn to get along without her if we can.

Hello ceiling I'm gonna stare at you awhile,
You know I can't sleep so won't you bear with me awhile,
We must all stick together or else I'll lose my mind,
I've got a feeling she'll be gone a long long time.

She went away and left us all alone the way she planned,
Guess we'll have to learn to get along without her if we can.

Honky Tonk Angel

Chords -

As I sit here tonight the jukebox playing,
The tune about the wild side of life,
As I listen to the words that you are saying,
It brings memories of when I was a trusting wife.

It wasn't God who made honky-tonk angels,
As you said in the words of your song,
Too many times married men think there still single,
That has caused many a good girl to go wrong.

It's a shame that all the blame in on us women,
Its not true that only you men feel the pain,
From the start most every heart that's ever broken,
Was because there always was a man to blame.

It wasn't God who made honky-tonk angels,
As you said in the words of your song,
To many times married men think their still single,
That has caused many a good girl to go wrong.

House Of The Rising Sun

Written by -
Recorded by - The Animals

Chords - Am C D F D

There is a house in New Orleans,
They call the rising sun,
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy,
And God I know I'm one.

My mother was a tailor,
She sewed my new blue jeans,
My father was a gamblin' man,
Down in New Orleans.

Now the only thing a gambler needs,
Is a suitcase and a trunk,
And the only time he's satisfied,
Is when he's on a drunk.

So mothers, tell your children,
Not to do what I have done,
Spend your life in sin and misery,
In the house of the rising sun.

Well one foot on the platform,
The other foot on a train,
I'm going back to New Orleans,
To wear that ball and chain.

There is a house in New Orleans,
They call the rising sun,
And its been the ruin of many a poor boy,
And God I know I'm one.

I can't help it if I'm still in love with you,

I can't help it if I'm still in love with you.

And suddenly I got that old time feeling,
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you.

I can't stop loving you,
I've made up my mind,
To live in memories,
Of those lonesome times,
I can't stop loving you,
It's useless to try,
So I'll just live my life,
In dreams of yesterday.

Those happy hours,
That we once knew,
So long ago,
Still make me blue,
They say that time,
Heals a broken heart,
But time has stood still,
Since we've been apart.

Last night, my tears like rain were fallin'.
I went to bed, so sad and blue.
Then I had a dream of you.

I dreamed, I was strollin' in the moonlight.
Underneath, the harvest moon.
I was thinkin' about you.

And then, you met me in the moonlight.
The stars were shining in your eyes.
But another was there too.

I don't believe you've met my baby.
You looked at him you looked at me.
I wondered who you were talkin' to.

I shook, the hand of your stranger.
But I was shaking more inside.
'Cause I was still wonderin' who.

Your arm, was restin' on his shoulder.
You smiled at him, he smiled at you.
His eyes were filled with victory.

He said, "My sister wants to marry."
And then my heart, was filled with ease.
I knew, that you would marry me.

I Don't Hurt Anymore

Written by - Don Robertson & Jack Rollins
Recorded by - Hank Snow

Chords -

It don't hurt anymore,
All my teardrops are dried.
No more walkin' the floor,
With that burnin' inside.
Just to think it could be,
Time has opened the door.
And at last I am free,
I don't hurt anymore.

Chorus:
No use to deny, I wanted to die,
The day you said we were through.
But now that I find, you're out of my mind,
I can't believe that it's true.
I've forgotten somehow,
That I cared so before.
And it's wonderful now,
I don't hurt anymore.

I Don't Remember Loving You

Written by -
Recorded by - John Conlee

Chords - G

Chorus:
I don't remember loving you,
And I don't recall the things,
You say you put me through.
You tell me that you've had,
A guilty conscience for so long.
You say that you walked out on me.
You say you did me wrong.
Well, I just don't see how that could be true.
'Cause I don't remember loving you.
I don't remember loving you.

You might talk to my doctor.
He drops by each day at two.
I get a funny feeling,
When I look into your eyes.
There's something in your smile,
That gives my stomach butterflies.
You must look like someone I once knew.
But I don't remember loving you.

Chorus:

I don't remember loving you.
I heard you mention children,
Did you say there's one or two?
You say I quit my job,
And then I drank myself insane.
You say that I ran down the highway,
Screaming out your name.
Well, that's not the sort of thing that I would do.
No, I don't remember loving you.
I don't remember loving you.
I absolutely positively know that can't be true.
But everyone I know here in this place,
Is really strange.
If you'll hand me my crayons,
I'll be glad to take your name,
In case I run across that guy you knew.
But I don't remember loving you.

I Forgot To Remember To Forget

Written by - Johnny Cash
Recorded by - Johnny Cash

Chords - A

I forgot to remember to forget her.
I can't seem to get her off my mind.
I thought I'd never miss her,
But I found out somehow.
I think about her almost all the time.

Chorus:
The day she went away, I made myself a promise.
That I'd soon forget we'd ever met.
But something sure is wrong,
'Cause I'm so blue and lonely,
I forgot to remember to forget.

I Guess Things Happen That Way

Chords -

Well, you ask me if I'll forget my baby,
I guess I will some day.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.
You ask me if I'll get along,
I guess I will some way.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.

Chorus:
God gave me that girl to lean on, then he put me on my own.
Heaven help me be a man and have the strength to stand alone.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.

You ask me if I'll miss her kisses,
I guess I will every day.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.

You ask me if I'll find another.
I don't know, I can't say,
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.

I Heard The Bluebird Sing

Written by -
Recorded by - The Browns (Jim-Ed, Bonnie & Maxine)

Chords - D

I met a girl out in the hills,
Who gave my lonely heart a thrill,
Her beauty seemed just like a breath of spring,
And when I looked into her eyes,
I thought of blue midsummer skies,
And when I held her hand in mine,
I heard the bluebird sing.

They sang of wondering, (Wondering if you love her),
Will she marry, (Marry if you ask her),
Will her heart beat, (Heart beat true for him),
For then and ever more.
And when she's lonely, (Lonely is he near her),
When there's sadness, (Sadness will he cheer her),
Will they always, (Always be together),
Until in death they part.

I courted her for months on end, until she promised we'd be wed.
We planned on being married in the spring.
All through the long cold winter months,
It seemed that spring would never come.
And every gloomy winters day I heard the bluebird sing.

They sang of waiting, (Waiting for the flowers),
And of counting, (Counting every hour),
'Till the bluebird, (Bluebird brings his welcome),
Into the world once more.
And though we're waiting, (Waiting for the sunshine),
We keep hating, (Hating every storm cloud),
That has gathered, (Gathered on the mountain),
To keep us far apart.

And when at last spring touched the earth,
We married in the village church.
Our wedding seemed just like a dream come true.
So many years have come and gone,
Our love is still as true and strong,
As when I found her long ago and still the bluebird sing.

They sang of loving, (Loving every hour),
That I'm married, (Married to my flower),
We'll be happy, (Happy ever after),
As since the day we met.
And though we're older, (Older love is sweeter),
We grow fonder, (Fonder of each other),
We'll be sweethearts, (Sweethearts close together),
Until the end of time.

I Never Go Around Mirrors

Chords - C
Recorded by - Keith Whitley
Recorded by - Merle Haggard

I can't stand to see a good man go to waste,
One who never combs his hair or shaves his face,
A man who leans on wine, over love that's told a lie,
Oh it tears me up to see a grown man cry.

Chorus:
So I never go around mirrors,
I can't stand to see me .... without you by my side,
No I never go around mirrors,
'Cause I got a heartache to hide.

And it tears me up to see a grown man cry

I can't stand to be where heartaches hang around,
It's so easy for the blues to get me down,
To see a grown man cry, is more than I can stand,
I can't look into the eyes of half a man.

Chorus:

And it tears me up to see a grown man cry.

I Overlooked An Orchid

Written by -
Recorded by - Mickey Gilley

Chords - G

The orchid is a flower, that blooms so tenderly.
It thrills the fairest lady of the land.
If placed beside a blushing rose,
The rose could not compare.
But how was such as I to understand.

Chorus:
I overlooked an orchid, while searching for a rose.
The orchid that I overlooked was you.
The rose that I was searching for, has proved to be untrue.
The orchid that I find my dear was you.

The rose has lost its color, but the orchid stays the same.
And I’m alone to face these lonely years.
I didn’t see the orchid, I was looking for a rose.
And now I pay the price with bitter tears.

Chorus:

Chords - A

At my door the leaves are falling.
The cold wild wind will come.
Sweethearts walk by together.
And I still miss someone.

I go out on a party.
And look for a little fun.
But I find a darkened corner.
'Cause I still miss someone.

Chorus:
Oh I never got over those blue eyes.
I see them everywhere.
I miss those arms that held me.
When all the love was there.

I wonder if she's sorry.
For leavin' what we'd begun.
There's someone for me somewhere.
And I still miss someone.

I said I found someone I love better,
But I still hear your voice call my name.

I thought I heard you calling my name.
Funny I still feel this way.
Your voice seems so close but I knew,

I Walk The Line

Written by - John R. Cash
Recorded by -

Chords - D7

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine,
I keep my eyes wide open all the time,
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds,
Because you`re mine I walk the line.

I find it very, very easy to be true,
I find myself alone when each day is through,
Yes, I`ll admit that I`m a fool for you,
Because you`re mine I walk the line.

As sure as night is dark and day is light,
I keep you on my mind both day and night,
And happiness I`ve known proves that it`s right,
Because you`re mine I walk the line.

You`ve got a way to keep me on your side,
You give me cause for love that I can`t hide,
For you I know I`d even try to turn the tide,
Because you`re mine I walk the line.

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine,
I keep my eyes wide open all the time,
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds,
Because you`re mine I walk the line.

I Wonder How The Old Folks Are At Home

Written by -
Recorded by -

Chords -

Well I wonder how the old folks are at home.
I wonder if they miss me while I roam.
I wonder if they pray, for the boy who went away,
And left his dear old parents all alone.

Chorus:
You can hear the cattle lowing in the lane,
You could see the fields of blue grass where I've grown,
You could almost hear them cry, as they kissed their boy goodbye,
Well I wonder how the old folks are at home.

Just a village and a homestead on the farm,
And a mother's love to shield you from all harm.
A mother's love so true, a sweetheart that loves you,
A vilage and a homestead on the farm.

Chords - G D Am C

I wouldn't change a single thing about you if I could,
The way you are just suits me to a tee.
A princess in a story book a king upon his throne,
Thats what we are and you belong to me.

Chorus
I wouldn't change you if I could I love you as you are,
Your all that I could wish for if I wished upon a star,
An angel sent from heaven, your everything that's good,
Your perfect just the way you are I wouldn't change you if I could.

Your eyes your lips your tender smile, I'd leave them as they are,
And come what may I would not change a thing.

The only thing I'd change would be your name.

I've Enjoyed As Much of This As I Can Stand

Written by - Bill Anderson 1961
Recorded by - Porter Wagoner recorded 1962

Chords - D

I've enjoyed as much of this as I can stand.

You look lovelier tonight than I remember,
I'm so glad I got to see you once again,
I've enjoyed just sitting down and reminiscing,
But I've enjoyed as much of this as I can stand.

So you say you're happy now you've found a new love,
Tell him I said he's a lucky, lucky man,
No I don't think I'll have time to see his picture,
I've enjoyed as much of this as I can stand.

Chorus:
Theres's so much more between us than this table.
All those years, all those dreams, all those plans,
Guess you know without me sayin, I still love you,
But I've enjoyed as much of this as I can stand.

If Anyone Ought To Know

Written by - Merle Haggard/Bonnie Owens
Recorded by - Merle Haggard

Chords -

Sittin' in a roadside tavern,
The only cowboy seated here alone,
Every night some lonely lady,
Wants to tell me all about,
Her broken home,
It's like they can see inside my mind,
They act as though they know I'll understand,
Guess they know it when they hear my name,
And feel it when they touch my tremblin' hand.

Chorus:
Oh if anyone ought to know,
The loneliness of a rollin' stone,
It oughta be me,
I've always been alone,
If anyone oughta know,
'Bout things like hurt and misery,
It ought to be me,
Lord in heaven knows it ought to be me.

Guitar Solo:

Chorus:
If anyone ought to know,
The loneliness of a rollin' stone,
It ought to be me,
That's the reason I'm all alone,
If anyone ought to know,
Lord in heaven knows it ought to be me.

Chords - G

If I could only win your love,
I'd make the most of everything,
I'd proudly wear your wedding ring,
My heart would never stray when you're away,
If I could only win your love.
I'd give my all to make it live,
Yo'll never know how much I give,
If I could only win your love.

Oh how can I ever say,
How I crave your love when your gone away.
On how can I ever show,
How I burn inside when you hold me tight,
If I could only win your love.
I'd give my all to make it live,
You'll never know how much I give.
If I could only win your love.

If Your Love Ran Out Tomorrow

Written by -
Recorded by - Bobby Lalonde

Chords - D G A Bm Gflat m A#

Maybe I don't do enough to show you that I care,
And to tell you what it means to me, is knowing that your there.
It's only been a few short years, since I made you my wife,
You've already given love enough, to last me all my life.

Chorus:
And if your love ran out tomorrow and I was on my own,
I'd try to get by, on the memories we've known,
To live my life without you would be more than I could bear,
If your love ran out tommorow, I've had more than my share.

Sometimes I get caught up, my work gets in the way,
But remember that I love you, every minute, every day.
I never have to ask myself, how lucky I can be,
Just to have someone like you, love someone like me.

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry

Written by -
Recorded by - B.J. Thomas

Chords - D A G6

Did you hear that lonesome whippoorwill,
He sounds too blue to fly.
The midnight train is winding low,
And I'm so lonesome I could cry.

Did you ever see a night so long,
When time goes crawling by.
The moon just went behind the clouds,
And I'm so lonesome I could cry.

Did you ever see a robin weep,
When leaves begin to die.
That means he's lost the will to live,
And I'm so lonesome I could cry.

The silence of a falling star,
Lights up a purple sky.
And so I wonder where you are,
And I'm so lonesome I could cry.

In the Early Mornin' Rain

Written by - Gordon Lightfoot
Recorded by - Gordon Lightfoot

Chords - D A G6

Chorus:
In the early mornin' rain with a dollar in my hand,
With an achin' in my heart and my pockets full of sand,
I'm a long way from home and I miss my loved ones so,
In the early mornin' rain with no place to go.

Out on runway number nine big seven-o-seven set to go,
But I'm stuck here in the grass where the cold wind blows,
Now the liquor tasted good and the women all were fast,
Well, there she goes, my friend she's rollin' now at last.

Chorus:

Hear the mighty engines roar, see the silver bird on high,
She's away and westward bound far above the clouds she'll fly,
Where the mornin' rain don't fall and the sun always shines,
She'll be flyin' o'er my home in about three hours time.

Chorus:

This old airport's got me down it's no earthly good to me,
'Cause I'm stuck here on the ground as cold and drunk as I can be,
You can't jump a jet plane like you can a freight train,
So I'd best be on my way in the early mornin' rain.

Chords - Bb F F7 C C7 G G7

In the misty moonlight,
By the flick`ring fire light,
Any place is all right,
Long as I`m with you.

In a far away land
On the tropic sea sand,
If your hands in my hand,
I won't be blue.

Way up on the mountain,
Or way down in the valley,
I know I`ll be happy,
Any place, any where,
I don`t care.

In the misty moonlight,
By the flick`ring fire light,
Any place is all right,
long as you are there.

In the misty moonlight,
by the flick`ring fire light,
any place is all right,
long as you are there.

In a far a way land,
on the tropic sea sand,
If your hand`s in my hand,
I won`t be blue.

Way up on the mountain,

I know I`ll be happy,

I Like Beer

Written by - Tom T. Hall
Recorded by - Tom T. Hall

Chords - G

In some of my songs I have casually mentioned,
The fact that I like to drink beer.
But this little song is more to the point,
So roll out the barrel and lend me your ear.

Chorus:
I like beer, It makes me a jolly good fellow.
I like beer, It helps me unwind,
And sometime it makes me feel mellow.
(makes him feel mellow)
Whiskey’s too rough, champaign cost too much.
Vodka puts my mouth in gear.
This little refrain should help me explain,
As a matter of fact I like beer.
My wife often frowns when we're out on the town,
I'm wearing a suit and a tie .
She's sipping vermouth and she thinks I'm uncouth,
When I yell when the waiter walks by.

Chorus:

Last night I dreamed, that I passed from the scene,
And I went to a place so sublime.
The water was clear, and it tasted like beer,
Then they turned it all into wine. (ahhhh)

Chorus:

(Yes he likes beer)

It's Love Without End, Amen

Written by -
Recorded by - George Strait

Chords -

I got sent home from school one day, with a shiner on my eye,
Fightin' was against the rules, and it didn't matter why,
When Dad got home I told that story, just like I'd rehearsed,
And stood there on those tremblin' knees, and waited for the worst.

He said let me tell you a secret, about a fathers love,
A secret that my daddy said, was just between us,
He said daddy's don't just love their children, every now and then,
It's a love without end amen, it's a love without end amen.

When I became a father in the spring of 81,
There was no doubt that my boy, was just like my father's son,
And when I thought my patience, had been tested to the end,
I took my daddy's secret, and I passed it on too him.

I said let me tell you a secret, about a father's love,
A secret that my daddy said, was just between us,
I said daddy's don't just love their children, every now and then,
It's a love without end amen, it's a love without end amen.

Last night I dreamed I died, and stood outside those pearly gats,
When suddenly I realized, there must be some mistake,
If they know half the things I've done, they'll never let me in,
Then somewhere from the other side, I heard these words again.

They said let me tell you a secret, about a fathers love,
A secret that my daddy said, was just between us,
You see daddy's don't just love their children, every now and then,
It's a love without end amen, it's a love without end amen.

It's Not Love (But It's Not Bad)

Written by - Glenn Martin & Hank Cocharan
Recorded by - Merle Haggard

Chords - G

She was always there each time I needed you,
Holding on to me like I held on to you.
We still don't have what you and I once had.
No it's not love, but it's not bad.

Chorus:
No, it's not love, not like ours was.
It's not love but it keeps love from driving me mad.
And I don't have to wonder who she's had.
No it's not love, but it's not bad.

I turn to her when you leave me alone.
Sometimes even when youé here, and you're still gone.
She's slowly changing what you leave so sad.
No, it's not love, but 't's not bad.

Chorus:
No it's not love, but it's not bad.

Chords -

We got married in a fever,
Hotter than a pepper sprout,
We've been talkin' 'bout Jackson,
Ever since the fire went out,
I'm goin' to Jackson,
Gonna mess around,
Yeah I'm goin' to Jackson,
Look out Jackson town.

Well go on down to Jackson,
Go ahead and wreck your health,
Go play your hand you big talkin',
Man make a big fool of yourself,
Go on to Jackson go comb your hair,
Go and snowball Jackson see if I care.

When I breeze into that city,
People gonna stoop and bow,
All them women gonna make me,
Teach them what they don't know how,
I'm goin' to Jackson,
Good-bye thats all she wrote.

When they laugh at you in Jackson,
I'll be dancin' on a Pony Keg,
They'll lead you 'round town like a scalded hound,
With your tail tucked between your legs,
So go on down to Jackson you big talkin' man,
I'll be waitin' in Jackson behind my Japan fan.

We got married in a fever,
Hotter than a pepper sprout,
We've been talkin' 'bout Jackson,
Ever since the fire went out,
I'm goin' to Jackson and thats a fact,
Yeah I'm goin' to Jackson ain't never comin' back.

Just A Girl I Used To Know

Written by -
Recorded by - George Jones

Chords - G

There's a picture that I carry,
One we made some time ago.
If they ask who's in the picture with me,
I say it's just someone I used to know.

Just a girl, I used to go around with.
Just a friend, from long ago.
I don't tell them how lost I am without her.
I say she's just someone I used to know.

Say, she's just another girl now,
Just a flame, that's lost it's glow.
And I say, her name has slipped my mind now.
And she's just a girl I used to know.

Just a girl I used to spend some time with,
Just a friend from long ago,
I don't talk about the nights I cry about her.
I say she's just a girl I used to know.
Just a girl, I used to know.

Chords - A

So I feel so blue sometimes I wanta' die,
And so I've got a broken heart so what,
They say that time will heal all wounds in mice and men,
And I know that someday I'll forget and love again.

But just between you and me,
I've got my doubts about it,
'Cause just between you and me,
Your too much to forget.

So I've lost the only girl I've ever loved,
And so I've never felt so low so what,
I'll just tell myself each time I wanta' cry,
That someday time will fry the teardrops from my eyes.

But just between you and me,
I'm not so sure about it,

Kentucky Bluebird

Written by - Keith Whitley
Recorded by - Keith Whitley

Chords - "E"

Blown down the highway by two different winds
Lord only knows when I'll see you again
You're 'bout as close as the stars up above
You're my long distance love

Kentucky Bluebird, I heard your song today
But when I try to touch you, you fly away
Blue is a feeling I'm learning so well
Turn on the TV in another hotel
Turn down the volume and stare at the wall
God I wish you would call

Kentucky Bluebird, I heard your song today
But when I try to touch you, you fly away
How I hate the miles between us
They get longer each day
I had this dream and you should have seen us

Holding each other and drifting away
Kentucky Bluebird, I heard your song today
But when I try to touch you, you fly away
You fly away. **************************************************************************************

Kids get lonesome too,
So this song's just for you,
When you get lonely,
All ages go insane,
Even young love causes pain,
When you get lonely.

Bad days come in pairs,
It's good to know somebody care,
When you get lonely,
Kids have bad days too,
Wish I could be with you,
When you get lonely.

Chorus:
But we're so far apart,
Babe you're such a kid at heart,
And I love you only,
Kids have feelings too,
Even young hearts break in two,
When you get lonely.

Instrumental:

Chorus:
But we're so far apart,
Babe you're such a kid at heart,
Kids get lonesome too,
And I'm afraid of what you'll do,
When you get lonely.

They wonder how does a man get to be this way,
I've always got a smilin' face, anytime and any place,
And every time they ask me why, I just smile and say.

Chorus:
You've got to kiss an angel good morning,
And let her know you think about her when your gone.
Kiss an angel good morning,
And love her like the devil when you get back home.

Well people try to guess, the secret of my happiness,
But some of them never learn it's a simple thing.
The secret that I'm speakin' of, is a woman and a man in love,
And the answer is in this song that I always sing.

Ladies Love Outlaws

Written by - Lee Clayton
Recorded by - Waylon Jennings

Chords - E E7 A B B7

Bessie was a lovely child from west Tennessee,
Leroy was an outlaw, hard eyed and mean,
One day she saw him starring,
And it chilled her to the bone,
And she knew she had to see that look,
On a child of her own.

Chorus:
'Cause ladies love outlaws,
Like babies love stray dogs,
Ladies touch babies,
Like a banker touches gold,
Outlaws touch ladies somewhere,
Deep down in their soul.

Linda was a lady, blonde and built to last,
Billy was a no good guitar picker,
Running from his past,
List'ning to his songs,
She heard nothing but bad news,
Still she made her mind up,
To try to get him win or lose.

Chorus:

Jessie liked Cadillacs,
And diamonds for her hand,
Waymor had a reputation,
As a ladies man,
Late one night her light of love,
Fin'ly gave the sign,
And Jessie parked her Cadillac,
And took her place in line.

Let’s make a fair trade, your heart for mine.

Let's Say Goodbye Like We Said Hello

Chords - D

Let's say goodbye like we said hello,
In a friendly kind of way,
There's something wrong your love is gone,
I've no reason now to stay,
We live and love we meet and part,
Then broken hearts must pay,
So let's say goodbye like we said hello,
In a friendly kind of way.

Your love sweetheart I won't forget,
Your always on my mind,
Your all the happiness I knew,
So thoughtful sweet and kind,
For old times sake I'm asking you,
To think of me someday,
So let's say goodbye like we said hello,
In a friendly kind of way.

I wish you happiness sweetheart,
In everything you do,
May good luck always come your way,
And every dream come true.
I'll remember you and the l9ove we knew,
The love of yesterday,
Let's say goodbye like we said hello,
In a friendly kind of way.

If I should meet some other dear,
And learn to love her too,
I hope and pray somehow sweetheart,
They'll make me think of you,
A tender smile an old love song,
A heart so light and gay,
So let's say goodbye like we said hello,
In a friendly kind of way.

Let's say goodbye like we said hello,
In a friendly kind of way,
There's something wrong your love is gone,
I've no reason now to stay,
We live and love we meet and part,
Then broken hearts must pay,
So let's say goodbye like we said hello,
In a friendly kind of way.

Life Turned Her That Way

Chords - A

If she seems cold and bitter,
Then I beg of you,
Just stop, and consider,
All that, she's been through.
Don't be quick to condemn her,
For things she might say.
Just remeber, life turned her that way.

Chorus:
She been walked on, and stepped on, so many times,
And I hate to admit it,
But the last footprint's mine.
She was cryin' when I met her,
She cries harder today,
So don't blame her, life turned her that way.

Lind On My Mind

Written by -

Chords - G

Now I’m lyin’ here with Linda on my mind.
And next to me my soon to be, the one I left behind.
And Lord its killin’ me to see her cryin’
She knows I’m lyin’ here beside her with Linda on my mind.

She knows that I once loved her,
And placed no one above her.
And I never thought I’d ever set her free.
But it just wasn’t in my plan.
The way Linda squeezed my hand,
And held me close,
The first time as she danced with me.

She said I’ve loved you for such a long time.
But you’re married to a friend of mine,
And I tried hard to never let it show.
But my love for you is stronger,
I can’t hide it any longer.
And so I thought I’d better let you know.

Now I’m lying here with Linda on my mind .
And next to me my soon to be.
The one I left behind .
And Lord its kill’in me to see her cryin’
She knows I’m lyin here beside her with Linda on my mInd.
She knows I’m lyin’ here beside her with Linda on my mind.

Little Brown Building

Written by -
Recorded by - Bobby Bare

Chords - G

They passed an ordinance in our town.
They said we'd have to tear it down.
That little old shack out back so dear to me.
Though the health department said, "It's day was over and dead".
It will stand forever in my memory.

Chorus:
Don't let 'em tear, that little brown building down.
Don't let 'em tear, that that precious building down.
Don't let 'em tear, that dear old building down.
For there's not another like it, in the country or the town.

It was not so long ago, that I went trippin' through the snow.
Out to that house behind my old hound dog.
Where I would sit me down to rest, like a snowbird on his nest.
And I'd read the Sears and Robuck catalogue.

Chorus:

Oh I would sing a happy tune, peepin' through the quarter moon.
As my daddy's kin had done before.
It was in that quiet spot, daily cares could be forgot.
And it gave the same relief to rich or poor.

Chorus:

It wasn't fancy built at all, it had newspapers on the wall.
It was air conditioned in the winter time.
It was just a humble hut, but it's door was never shut.
And a man could get inside without a dime.

Local Flowers

Chords - D

I have traveled this world over.
I have rambled all my days.
When my journey's have all ended.
Place some flowers on my grave.

Chorus:
Local flowers, just some daisies.
Wildwood flowers from the hill.
Where I will spend my eternal hours,
Lay me down with local flowers.

Please don't buy those red carnations.
I don't need the lilies fair.
Just go walkin' on the mountain.
Gather while it's blooming there.

Rosemary means that you'll remember.
Clover sweet as the love we shared.
Myrtle says that you will miss me.
Ramblin' roses say you care.

Chorus:

Let the birds sing from the tree tops.
Let the grass grow where it may.
No arrangement, no bright ribbons.
Just a simple, wild bouquet.

Lookin' For Love

Chords - Gmaj7 F#m Em A A/G A/F A/E

Well I've spent a life time lookin' for you,
Singles bars and good time lovers were never true,
Playin' a fool's game, hopin' to win,
And tellin' those sweet lies and losin' again.

Chorus:
I was lookin' for love in all the wrong places,
Lookin' for love in too many faces,
Searchin' their eyes and lookin' for traces,
Of what I'm dreamin' of,
Hopin' to find a friend and a lover,
I'll bless the day I discover,
Another heart lookin' for love.

Then you came a-knockin' at my heart's door,
You're ev'ry thing I've been lookin' for,
No more lookin' for love in all the wrong places,
Searchin' for love in too many faces,
Of what I'm dreamin' of,
Hopin' to find a friend and a lover,
I'll bless the day I discover,
Another heart lookin' for love.

And I was alone then, no love in sight,
And I did ev'ry thing I could to get me through the night,
Don't know where it start or where it might end,
I turned to a stranger just like a friend.

Chorus:

Now that I've found a friend and a lover,
I bless the day I discovered you, oh you.

Chords - D

Chorus:
Lord I hope this day is good,
I'm feelin' empty and misunderstood,
I should be thankful Lord I know I should,
But Lord I hope this day is good.
Lord, have you forgotten me?
I've been praying to you faithfully,
I'm not saying I'm a righteous man,
But Lord I hope you understand.

I don't need fortune and I don't need fame,
Send down the thunder Lord, send down the rain,
But when you're planning just how it should be,
Plan a good day for me.

All that I'm asking is a little less crime,
It might be hard for the devil to do,
But it would be easy for you.

Lost Together

Written by - Jim Cuddy & Greg Keelor
Recorded by - Blue Rodeo

Chords -

Strange and beautiful are the stars tonight,
That dance around your head,
In your eyes I see that perfect world,
I hope that doesn't sound too weird,
But I want all the world to know,
That your love's all I need,
All that I need.

Chorus:
And if we're lost, then we are lost together,
Ya' if we're lost, we are lost together.

I stand before this faceless crowd,
And I wonder why I bother,
So much controlled by so few
Stumbling from one disaster to another,
I've heard it all so many times before,
It's all a dream to me now,
A dream to me now.

Chorus:
In the silence of this whispered night,
I listen only to your breath,
And that second of a shooting star,
Somehow it all makes sense,
And I want all the world to know,
That your love's all I need,
All that I need.

Love Helps Those Who Cannot Help Themselves

Chords - F Fdm G C Am Bm

Grandma she don't really get around good anymore,
In fact to get around the house, is really quite a chore,
But everyday somebody seems to find the time to stop,
To see if Grandma needs something, from where they go to shop.

Chorus:

'Cause you see, love helps those, who cannot help themselves,
It cares about those hearts, that's been put up on the shelf,
It'll introduce a lonely soul, to a lonely someone else,
Love helps those, who cannot help themselves.

Mr. Johnson has a small farm down in southern Tennessee,
But one year he took ill before the time to plant the seed,
And no one knows which neighbour planted or they just won't tell,
But he had the best crop ever, by the time that he got well.

Chorus:

A little helpless baby child is born into this world,
But she didn't have a daddy, and her mother was just a girl,
But there came a young man willing to give both of them a home,
The girl he married, the child he cherished, as though she was his own.

On a day like today we passed the time away,
Writing love letters in the sand,
How you laughed while I cried,
Each time I saw the tide,
Wash our love letters from the sand.

You made a vow that you would always be true
But somehow that vow meant nothing to you
Now my broken heart aches with every wave that breaks
Over love letters in the sand.

Love Sick Blues

Chords - D

I got a feelin' called the blu-ues, oh Lawd,
Since my baby said good-bye.
And I don't know what I'll do-oo-oo.
All I do is sit and sigh-igh, oh Lawd,
That last long day she said good-bye.
Well Lawd I thought I would cry.
She'll do me, she'll do you,
She's got that kind of lovin'.
Lawd I love to hear her when she calls me
Sweet da-ad-ad-ay, such a beautiful dream,
I hate to think it' all o-o-ver.
I've lost my heart it seems.
I've grown so used to you some how,
Well, I'm nobody's sugar daddy now,
And I'm lon-oo-on-onsome,
I got the love sick blues.

Well I'm in love, I'm in love with a beautiful gal,
That's what's the matter with me,
Well I;m in love, I'm in love, with a beautiful gal,
But she don't care about me
Lawd I tried and I tried, to keep her satisfied,
But she just wouldn't stay,
So now that she is lea-ea-eavin',
This is all I can say.

First thing I remember knowin' , was a lonesome whistle blowin',
And a young 'un's dream of growin' up to ride.
On a freight train leavin' town, not knowin' where I'm bound,
No one could change my mind, but Mama tried.
One and only rebel child, from a fam'ly meek and mild.
My Mama seemed to know what lay in store,
'Spite all my Sunday learnin', tow'rds the bad I kept on turnin',
'Till Mama couldn't hold me anymore.

Chorus:
And I turned twenty-one in prison, doin' life without parole.
No one could steer me right, but Mama tried, Mama tried,
Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading I denied.
That leaves only me to blame, but Mama tried.

Dear ole' daddy, rest his soul, left my mom a heavy load.
She tried so very hard to fill his shoes.
Workin' hours without rest, wanted me to have the best.
She tried to raise me right but I refused.

(Constant sorrow through his days)
I am the man of constant sorrow,
I've seen trouble on my days.
I bid farewell to old Kentucky,
The place where he was born and raised.
(The place where he was born and raised)

For six long years, I've been in trouble,
No pleasure here on earth I find.
For in this world, I'm bound to ramble,
I have no friends to help me now.
(He has no friends to help him now)

Oh, I'm bound to ride that northern railroad,
Perhaps I'll die upon this train
(Perhaps I'll die upon this train)

Maybe your friends think I'm just a stranger,
My face you'll never see no more.
But there is one promise that is given,
I'll meet you on God's golden shore.

Chords -

Tonight down here in the valley,
I'm lonesome and oh how I feel.
As I sit here alone in my cabin,
I can see your mansion on the hill.

Do you recall when we parted?
The stories to me you revealed.
You said you could live without love dear,
In your loveless mansion on the hill.

I've waited all through the years love,
To give you a heart true and real.
'Cause I know you are living in sorrow,
In your loveless mansion on the hill.

The light shines bright from your window,
The trees stand so silent and still.
I know you're alone with your pride dear,
In your loveless mansion on the hill.

Chords - C

Nibblin' on sponge cake, watchin' the sun bake,
All of the tourists covered with oil,
Strummin' my six string, on my front porch swing,
Smell those shrimp their beginning to boil.

Chorus:
Waisted away again in Margaritaville,
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt,
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame,
But I know it's nobody's fault.

I don't know the reason I spent here all season,
With nothing to show but this brand new tatoo,
But it's a real beauty a Mexican cutie,
How it got here I haven't a clue.

Chorus:

I blew out my flip flop, stepped on a pop top,
Cut my heel had to cruise back home,
But there's booze in the blender, and soon it will render,
That frozen concocsion that helps me hang on.

Chorus:

Some people say that there's a woman to blame,
But I know, it's my own damn fault.

Mary of the Wild Moor

Written by -
Recorded by -

Chords -

It was on one cold winter night,
And the wind blew across the wild moor,
As poor Mary came wondering home with her child,
And as she came to her own father's door.

Oh father dear father she cried,
Come down and open the door,
For the child in my arms it will parish and die,
By the winds that blow 'cross the wild moor.

Oh why did I leave this fair spot,
Where I once was happy and free,
I am now doomed to roam without friends or a home,
And no one to take pity on me.

But her father was deaf to her cry,
Not a sound of her voice did he hear,
Though the watch dog did howl and the village bells towl,
And the wind blew across the wild moor.

Oh how the old man must have felt,
When he came to the door the next morn,
Ane found Mary dead but the child still alive,
Closely clasped in its dead mothers arms.

In anguish he pulled his grey hair,
While the tears down his cheeks they did pour,
When he saw how that night she had parished and died,
From the winds that blew 'cross the wild moor.

Me And Bobby McGee

Written by - Kris Kristofferson & Fred Foster
Recorded by - Janis Joplin

Chords - C

Busted flat in Baton Rouge,
Headed for the trains,
Feelin' nearly faded as my jeans.
Bobby thumbed a diesel down,
Just before it rained,
Took us all the way to New Orleans.
I took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana,
And was blowin' sad while Bobby sang the blues,
With them windshield wipers slappin' time,
And Bobby clappin' hands,
We finally sang up every song that driver knew.

Freedom's just another word for,
Nothin' left to lose,
Nothin' ain't worth nothin' but it's free,
eelin' good was easy Lord,
When Bobby sang the blues,
And feelin' good was good enough for me,
Good enough for me and Bobby McGee.

From the coal mines of Kentucky,
To the California sun,
Bobby shared the secrets of my soul,
Standin' right beside me Lord,
Through everything I done,
And every night she kept me from the cold.

Then somewhere near Salinas Lord,
I let her slip away,
Lookin' for the home I hope she'll find,
And I'll trade all of my tomorrows,
For a single yesterday,
Holdin' Bobby's body next to mine.

Freedom's just another word for,
Nothin' left to lose,
Nothin' left is all she left for me,
Feelin' good was easy Lord,
When Bobby sang the blues,
And Buddy that was good enough for me,
Good enough for me and Bobby McGee.

Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da,
Da, da, da, da, da,
Da, da, da, da, dee, and Bobby McGee.

Midnight 'Till Dawn

Written by -
Recorded by - Sylvia Tyson

Chords -

I work every day in a trucker's café,
And at night I serve drinks in a bar,
I've nothing to say to the men who drop by,
So that none of them get very far,
You may think that its money but that's not the reason,
That keeps me labouring on,
Cause I'm working from morning till midnight,
And I'm weeping from midnight till dawn.

For once I was happy and full of the pictures,
That only a young girl could plan,
A life time of love all wrapped up in a bundle,
And placed in the hands of a man,
But then he found another he told me he loved her,
He jumped in his rig and was gone,
So I'm working from morning till midnight,
And I'm weeping from midnight till dawn.

Oh life isn't easy and I'm nearly crazy,
Just trying to keep myself sane,
Oh how can I try cause I know,
If I saw him I'd do it all over again,
So I give all my love to my sweet little baby,
As only a poor mother can,
And I'm working from morning till midnight,
And I'm weeping from midnight till dawn.

Miller's Cave

Written by - Harlan Howard
Recorded by - Hank Snow

Chords - C

Way down in, the state of Georgia,
Thru the swamps and everglades.
There's a hole in Tiger Mountain.
God help the man who gets lost in Miller's Cave.

I had a girl, in Waycross, Georgia,
But she had unfaithful ways.
Made me feel, I was unwanted.
Like the bats and the bears in Miller's Cave.

I couldn't stand the way she did me,
Couldn't take her low down ways.
Before I'd stay with a cheatin' woman,
I go live with the bears in Miller's Cave.

I caught her out, one Sunday morning,
With a man, they call Big Dave.
Meanest man in waycross, Georgia.
I'd rather fight a mountain lion in Miller's Cave.

I said you'll pay, both you and Davey,
I must see you in you grave.
They laughed at me and then I shot 'em.
I took their cheatin' schemin' bones to Miller's Cave.

That woman made, me feel unwanted,
But I showed 'em I was brave.
Most wanted man in the state of Georgia.
But they'll never find me 'cause I'm lost in Miller's Cave.

Dark cold cave, Miller's Cave.

Mississippi Cotton Pickin' Delta Town

Written by -
Recorded by - Charlie Pride

Chords -

Chorus:
In a Mississippi cotton pickin' delta town,
One dusty street, to walk up and down.
Nothin' much to do but just hang around,
In a Mississippi cotton pickin' delta town.

Down in the delta where I was born,
All we raised was cotton, potatoes and corn.
I've picked cotton 'till my fingers hurt,
Draggin' a sack through the delta dirt.

I've worked hard the whole week long,
Pickin' my fingers to the blood and bone,
Ain't a lot of money in a cotton bale,
At least, when you try to sell.

Chorus:

On Saturday night we'd get dressed up,
Catch us a ride on a pickup truck.
On a gravel road that nearly stranged us,
That cotton pickin' delta dust.

We'd sit across the street on the depot porch,
Lookin' at the folks lookin' back at us.
Munchin' on a dust covered ice cream cone,
Wonderin' how we'd get back home.

Mr. Bojangles

Written by - Jerry Jeff Walker
Recorded by - Jerry Jeff Walker

Chords - D D7 G A7 F# Bm E9 A11

I knew a man Bojangles and he danced for you,
In worn out shoes,
With silver hair, a ragged shirt and baggy pants,
The old soft shoe.
He jumped so high, jumped so high,
Then he lightly touched down.

Chorus:
Mister Bojangles, mister Bojangles,
Mister Bojangles, mister Bojangles, dance.

I met him in a cell in New Orleans,
I was down and out,
He looked at me to be the eyes of age,
As he spoke right out,
He talked of life, talked of life,
He laughed slapped his leg a step.

Chorus:

He said his name, Bojangles, then he danced a lick,
Across the cell,
He grabbed his pants a better stance,
Oh he jumped up high,
He clicked his heels,
He let go a laugh, let go a laugh,
Shook back his clothes all around.

Chorus:

He danced for those at minstrel shows,
And county fairs,
Throughout the south,
He spoke with tears of fifteen years,
How his dog and he, travelled about,
His dog up and died, he up and died,
After twenty years he still grieved.

Chorus:

He said I dance now at every chance in honky tonks,
For drinks and tips,
But most of the time I spend behind these county bars,
He said I drinks a bit,
He shook his head and as he shook his head,
I heard someone ask please.

No Time To Cry

Written by - Iris DeMent
Recorded by - Merle Haggard

Chords -

My father died a year ago today,
The roosters started crowin, when they carried dad away,
There beside my mother, in the living room I stood,
With my brother and my sister knowin', Dad was gone for good,
Well I stayed at home just long enough, to lay him in the ground,
And then I caught a plane to do a show, up north in Detroit town,
Because I'm older now and I've got no time to cry.

I've got no time to look back, I've got no time to see,
The pieces of my heart, that have been ripped away from me,
And if the feelin' starts to comin', I've learned to stop 'em fast,
Cause I don't know if I let them go, they might not wanna pass,
And there's just so many people, tryin' to get me on the phone,
And there's bills to pay and songs to play, and a house to make a home,
I guess I'm older now, and I've got no time to cry.

I can still remember before there was a Merle,
But so many things have changed, so much here in my world,
I remember sittin' on the front porch, when an ambulance went by,
Just listenin' to those sirens, I would break down and cry.

But now I'm walkin' and I'm talkin', don't just know what I'm supposed to do,
Workin' overtime to make sure that I don't come unglued,
I guess I'm older now, and I've got no time to cry,

Now I sit down on the sofa, and I watch the evening news,
There's a half a dozen tragedies, from which to pick and choose,
The baby that was missing, was found in a ditch today,
There's bombs a flyin, and people dyin' not so far away,
I'll take a beer from the refrigerator, and go sit out in the yard,
And with a cold one in my hand, I'm gonna bite down and swallow hard,
Because I'm older now, and I've got no time to cry,
It's true, I'm older now, just ain't no time to cry.

Iris DeMent came to the attention of Merle Haggard by way of the tribute album "Tulare Dust." He favoured her version of his classic hit "Big City." Merle is quoted as saying "She took the conviction and sincerity to a depth that I, the writer, had not been able to reach." That started the investigation into the person behind the voice, discovering she had two albums. Merle felt he'd discovered a treasure and felt compelled to help her in any way he could. To make a long story short, Iris DeMent's style and music are worth the investigation to do on your own.

Fishin' and lovin', I can't get enough.

That's country, I was raised a country child,
That's country, baby that's my style.

Got me a pickup I got a piece o' nothin' farm,
Shotgun and a hound dog, got a tractor in the barn,
Rockin' chair on my front porch and a jug o' homemade wine,
When I ain't makin' music that's how I spend my time.

That's country, I was born a country child,
That's country, baby that's my style.

You know every man and woman otta have a place to lay their burdens down,
Ya'll can do it in that city, but it ain't the same in that big ol' town.

Have you ever laid in a field of clover late into the night,
And watched a shootin' star fall from heaven to the moonfades out of sight,
You can go visitin' that's just what neighbours do,
I'm proud to be from the country now how about you.

That's country, I was raised on that Mississippi mile,
Now that's country, baby that's my style,
Well that's country, yes I was born a country child,
Now that's country, baby that's my style.

Ocean Front Property

Recorded by - George Strait

Chords - D

If you leave me I won't miss you,
And I won't ever take you back.
Girl you're memory won't ever haunt me,
'Cause i don't love you now if you'll buy that,

Chorus:
I've got some ocean front property in Ar-i-zo-na,
From my front porch you can see the sea,
I've got some ocean front property in Ar-i-zo-na,
Now if you'll buy that I'll throw the Golden Gate in free.

I don't worship the ground you walk on,
I never have and that's a fact.
I won't follow or try to find you,
'Cause I don't love you and if you'll buy that.

Oh Lonesome Me

Written by - Don Gibson
Recorded by - Don Gibson

Chords - D

Everybody's goin' out and havin' fun,
I'm just a fool for stayin' home and havin' none.
I can't get over how she set me free,
Oh lonesome me.
There must be someway I can lose these lonesome blues,
Forget about the past and find somebody new,
I've thought of everything from A to Zee,
Oh lonesome me.

Chorus:
Well I'll bet she's not like me,
She's out and fancy free,
Flirtin' with the boys with all her charms.
But I still love her so,
And brother don't you know,
I'd welcome her right back here in my arms.

There must be someway I can lose these lonesome blues,
Forget about the past and find somebody new,
I can't get over how she set me free,
Oh lonesome me.

Once A Day

Written by - Bill Anderson
Recorded by - Connie Smith

Chords - D

When you found somebody new I thought I never would,
Forget you, for I thought then I never could.
But time has taken all the pain away.
Until now I'm down to hurtin' once a day.

Chorus:
Once a day, all day long.
And once a night, from dusk 'till dawn.
The only time, I wish you weren't gone,
Is once a day, every day, all day long.

I'm so glad that I'm not like a girl I knew one time.
She lost the one she loved, then slowly lost her mind.
She sat around and cried her life away.
Lucky me, I'm only cryin', once a day.

Chorus:

Once a day, every day, all day long.

Paradise

Written by -
Recorded by - John Prine

Chords - D

When I was a child my family would travel,
Down to Western Kentucky where my parents were born.
There's a backward old town that's often remembered,
So many times that my mem'ries are worn.

Chorus:
And daddy, won't you take me, back to Muhlenberg County.
Down by the Green River, where Paradise lay.
Well I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in askin'.
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away.

Well sometimes we'd travel right down the Green River.
To the abandoned old prison down by Adrie Hill.
Where the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistols,
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill.

Chorus:

The coal company came with the world's largest shovel.
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land.
Well they dug for the coal 'till the land was forsaken,
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man.

Chorus:

When I die let my ashes, float down the Green River,
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester Dam.
I'll be halfway to heaven with Paradise waiting,
Just five miles away from wherever I am.

Chorus:

Pick Me Up On Your Way Down

Written by -
Recorded by -

Chords - D

Pick me up on your way down,
When youre blue and all alone,
When their glamour starts to bore you,
Come on back where you belong,
You may be their pride and joy,
But they'll find another toy,
And they'll take away your crown,
Pick me up on your way down.

They have changed your attitude,
Made you haughty and so rude,
Your new friends can take the blame,
Underneath your still the same,
When you learn these things are true,
I'll be waiting here for you,
When you tumble to the ground,
Pick me up on your way down.

Proud Mary

Written by -
Recorded by - Creadance Clearwater Revival

Chords - D A Bm

Left a good job in the city,
Working for the man every night and day,
And I never lost one minute of sleepin',
Worryin' bout the way things might have been,
Big wheels keep on turnin',
Proud Mary keep on burnin',
Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river.

If you come down to the river,
Bet your gonna find some people who live,
You don't have to worry if you have no money,
People on the river are happy to give,
Big wheels keep on turning,
Proud Mary keep on burnin',
Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river.

Cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis,
Pumped a lot of pain down in New Orleans,
But I never saw the good side of the city,
'Till I hitched a ride on a river boat queen,
Big wheels keep on turnin',
Proud Mary keep on burnin',
Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river.

Railroad Bum

Written by -

Chords -

I used to be a railroad bum living on the go,
I rode freight from Canada down to Mexico,
From sunny Cal. and Minnesota where the ripplin' waters fall,
I never seem to have a dime but I have myself a ball.

Singin' hi lee hi lo hi lee lee lee lo,
I used to be a railroad bum but I'm not anymore.

I walked in the silver dollar in Reno one night,
I dropped a quarter in a one arm bandit to the living land on right,
I took my winning then played and won ten thousand more,
I used to be a railroad bum but I'm not anymore.

Singin' hi lee hi lo hi lee lee lee lo,
I used to be a railroad bum but I'm not anymore.

When cottons pickin' in Tennessee and shrimp boats sail in Maine,
Peach pickin' time will find me ridin' the Georgia train,
'Cause I get restless when I'm still and I guess I always will,
I want to keep travellin' all my life over another hill.

Singing hi lee hi lo hi lee lee lee lo,
I used to be a railroad bum but I'm not anymore.

Ramblin' Fever

Written by -
Recorded by -Merle Haggard

Chords - G

My hat don't hang on the same nail too long,
My ears can't stand to hear the same old song.
And I don't leave the highway long enough,
To bog down in the mud.
'Cause I've got ramblin' fever in my blood.

I caught this ramblin' fever long ago,
When I first heard a lonesome whistle blow.
If someone said I ever gave a damn,
They damn sure told you wrong.
I've had ramblin' fever all along.

Chorus:
Ramblin' fever, the kind that can't be measured by degrees.
Ramblin' fever, there ain't no kind of cure for my disease.

There's times I'd like to bed down on the sofa,
And let some pretty lady rub my back,
And spend the early morning drinking coffee,
Talkin' about when I'll be coming back.

'Cause I don't let no woman tie me down,
And I'll never get too old to get around.
I'm gonna die along the highway and just rot away,
Like some old highline pole.
With this ramblin' fever in my soul.

Chorus: **************************************************************************************

Chords - C

We've been on the road now for many lonely hours,
My eyes are nearly blinded I can hardly see,
The weather man's announcin' storms and all that showers,
And if we keep on drivin' we'll be gone for eternity.

Rebels yea rest you've been on the road too long,
Rebels yea rest what your doin' is so wrong,
If you don't stop this car right now you won't be goin' home,
And rebels yea rest will be written on your stone.

We played in West Virginia and Memphis Tennessee,
The south it is pretty but the north keeps callin' me,
I long for my true love and to see my family,
And in my mind I hear a voice that keeps on tellin' me.

Rebels yea rest you've been on the road too long,
Rebels yea rest what your doin' is so wrong,
If you don't stop this car right now you won't be goin' home,
And rebels yea rest will be written on your stone,
And rebels yea rest will be written on your stone,

Release Me

Written by - Eddie Miller

Chords - F

Please release me,let me go,
For I don`t love you any more,
To waste our lives would be a sin,
Release me and let love again.

I have found a new love dear,
And I will always want her near,
Her lips are warm while yours are cold,
Release me, my darling, let me go.

Please release me, can`t you see,
You`d be a fool to cling to me,
To live a lie would bring us pain,
So release me and let me love again.

Ribbon Of Darkness

Written by - Gordon Lightfoot
Recorded by - Gordon Lightfoot

Chords - D A D7 G Em A7 Em7

Refrain:
Ribbon of darkness over me,
Since my true love walked out the door,
Tears I never had before,
Ribbon of darkness over me.

Refrain:
Clouds a gath'rin' o'er my head,
That kill the day and hide the sun,
That shroud the night when day is done,
Ribbon of darkness over me.

Bridge:
Rain is falling on the meadow,
Where once my love and I did lie,
Now she is gone from the meadow,
My love, goodbye.

Refrain:
Ribbon of darkness over me,
Where once the world was young as spring,
Where flow'rs did bloom and birds did sing,
Ribbon of darkness over me.

Bridge:
Here in this cold room lying,
Don't want to see no one but you,
Lord, I wish I could be dying,
To forget you.

Refrain:
Oh how I wish your heart could see,
How mine just aches and breaks all day,
Come on home and take away,
This ribbon of darkness over me.

Rocky Top

Written by -

Chords - G Em

Wish that I was on ol' Rocky Top,
Down in the Tennessee hills.
Ain't no smoggy smoke on Rocky Top,
Ain't no telephone bills.
Once I had a girl on Rocky Top,
Half bear the other half cat,
Wild as a mink and sweet as soda pop,
I still dream about that.

Chorus:

Once two strangers climbed ol' Rocky Top,
Lookin'for a moonshine still.
Strangers ain't come down from Rocky Top,
Reckon they never will.
Corn won't grow at all on Rockytop,
Grounds too rocky by far,
That's why all the folks on Rocky Top,
Get their corn from a jar.

Chorus:

I've had years of cramped up city life,
Trapped like a duck in a pen,
All I know is it's a pity life,
Can't be simple again.

Rocky Top, you'll always be,
Home sweet home to me,
Good ol' Rocky Top,
Rocky Top Tennessee,
Rocky Top Tennessee. **************************************************************************************

Rose Garden

Written by - Joe South
Recorded by - Lynn Anderson

Chords - G

Chorus:
I beg your pardon, I never promised you a rose garden,
Along with the sunshine, there's got to be a little rain sometime,
When you take you got to give, so live and let live,
Or let go, oh, oh, oh, oh, I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.

I could promise you things like big diamond rings,
But you don't find roses growing on stalks of clover,
So you better think it over.

When it's sweet talking you could make it come true,
I would give you the world right now on a silver platter,
But what would it matter.

So smile for a while and let's be jolly,
Love shouldn't be so melancholy,
Come and share the good times while we can.

Chorus:

I could sing you a tune and promise you the moon,
But if that's what it takes to hold you,
I'd just as soon let you go,
But there's one thing I want you to know.

You better look before you leap, still waters run deep,
And there won't always be someone there to pull you out,
And you know what I'm talkin' about.

Chorus:

Rose Coloured Glasses

Written by -
Recorded by - John Conolee

Chords - E

I don't know why, I keep on believin’, you need me,
When you prove so many times that it ain't true,
And I can't find one, good reason, for staying,
Maybe my leaving would be the best for you,

Chorus:
But these rose coloured glasses,
That I'm looking through,
Show only the beauty,
‘Cause they hide all the truth.

And they let me, hold on to, the good times,
The good lines, the ones I used to hear, when I held you,
And they keep me, from feeling, so cheated, defeated,
When reflections in your eyes show me a fool.

Chorus:

So I just keep on hope-in, believin’ that maybe,
By countin’ the many times I've tried,
You'll believe me, when I say, I love you,
And I'll lay these rose coloured glasses aside.

Chords -

The bright moon was shining, the night that we parted.
I held you and kissed you and called you my own.
With words sweet and tender you said that you loved me.
And that you’ll return when the roses bloom.

Chorus:
Roses are blooming, come back to me darling,
Come back to me darling, and never more roam.
Robins are singing, church bells are ringing.
Roses are blooming, so come back my own.

The days have been long dear, the nights have been dreary.
I’ve missed you my darling since you went away.
But I still keep hoping that you will remember.
That you will remember and come back someday.

Saginaw Michigan

Written by -
Recorded by - Lefty Frizel

Chords -

I was born in Saginaw Michigan,
I grew up in our house in Saginaw Bay,
My dad was a poor hard working Saginaw fisherman,
Too many times he came home with too little pay.

I loved a girl in Saginaw Michigan,
The daughter of a wealthy wealthy man,
Her dad called me that son of a Saginaw fisherman,
And not good enough to claim his daughter's hand.

Now I'm up here in Alaska looking around for gold,
Like a crazy fool I'm digging in this frozen ground so cold,
And with each new day I pray I'll strike it rich and then,
I'll go back home and claim my love in Saginaw Michigan.

I wrote my love in Saginaw Michigan,
I said honey I'm comin' home please wait for me,
And you can tell your dad I'm comin' home a richer man,
I struck the biggest rock in Klondike history.

Her dad met me in Saginaw Michigan,
He gave me a great big party with champagne,
He said you wise young ambitious man,
Will you sell your father-in-law your Klondike claim.

Now he's up there in Alaska digging around for gold,
The crazy fool is looking for the gold I never found,
It serves him right 'cause no one here is missing him,
Least of all the newly weds of Saginaw Michigan.

Chords -

Once we were so happy you were my very own,
Then you bought that guitar and ruined our happy home,
You told me that you're gonna pick your gonna be a star,
Well I'm tired of playin' second fiddle to an old guitar.

You gaze at that guitar on your knee,
In a way that you never look at me,
This love affair of your's has gone too far,
And I'm tired of playin' second fiddle to an old guitar.

You said it wouldn't be long till you'd be number one,
That we'd have lots of money and we'd have lots of fun,
Well all you've done is pick and grin and sing off-key so far,
And I'm tired of playing second fiddle to an old guitar.

You gaze at that guitar on your knee,
In a way you never look at me,
This love affair of your's has gone too far,
And I'm tired of playing second fiddle to an old guitar.

Well I've talked and preached and fought with you,
And tried most everything,
If you keep playin' that old guitar,
Then I'm a-gonna sing........Yodel.........

Shackles and Chain

Written by - Jimmie Davis
Recorded by - Jimmie Davis

Chords - G

This is the original version of this song, written and recorded by Jimmie Davis in the late 1930's and again in the 1950's.

On a long lonesome journey I'm going,
Come my darling and please, don't you cry.
'Tho in shackles and chain they will take me,
To a prison to stay 'till I die.

And at night through the bars,
I will gaze at the stars,
And long for your kisses in vain.
A piece of stone I will use as my pillow,
My companion will be shackles and chain.

Put your arms through the bars once my darlin',
Let me kiss those sweet lips I love best.
In heartaches you're my con-so-lation,
In sorrow, my haven of rest.

And at night through the bars,
I will gaze at the stars,
The plans that we made were in vain.
A piece of stone I will use as my pillow,
While I'm sleeping in shackles and chain.

She Thinks I Still Care

Written by -
Recorded by - George Jones

Chords - C

Just because I asked a friend about her.
Just because I spoke her name somewhere.
Just because I rang her number by mistake today.
She thinks I still care.

Just because I haunt the same old places.
Where the memory of her lingers everywhere.
Just because I'm not the happy guy I used to be.
She thinks I still care.

Chorus:
But if shes happy thinkin I still miss her,
Then let that silly notion bring her cheer,
.How could she ever be so foolish,
Oh where would she get such an idea.

Just because I ask a friend about her,
Just because I spoke her name somewhere,
Just because I saw her then went all to pieces,
She thinks I still care.
She thinks I still care.

Just because I haunt the same old places,
Where the memory of her lingers everywhere,
Just because I saw her then went all to pieces,
she thinksd I still care.

Chords -

I don't want your lonely mansion,
With a chill in every room,
I just want the love you promised,
Beneath the hallowed moon,
But you'd think I should be happy,
With your money and your name,
And hide myself in sorrow,
While you play your cheatin' game.

Silver threads and golden needles,
Cannot mend this heart of mine,
And I dare not drown my sorrow,
In the warm glow of your wine,
You can't buy my love with money,
'Cause I never was that kind,
Silver threads and golden needles,
Cannot mend this heart of mine.

Sin City Blues

Written by - Merle Haggard/Theresa Lane Haggard/Joe Manuel
Recorded by - Merle Haggard

Chords -

I've been making the scene down here in New Orleans,
Where the ol' Mardi Gras makes the news,
It's hard to believe, I'd ever want to leave,
Leaving with the Sin City Blues.

I'm tired of the town, through hanging around,
Too many women to choose,
I'm sick up and fed, need to leave and clear my head,
Leaving with the Sin City Blues.

I'm going to let this ol' sin city go,
I'm going to move up North to Idaho,
Maybe settle down in Courderlane,
Make myself a home in the rain.

I'm tired of the sleaze, I'm tired of the tease,
Burned out on that Bourbon Street booze,
I love rice and beans, but I'm leaving New Orleans,
Leaving with the Sin City Blues.

Instrumental:

Goodbye Louisian! I've stood all I can,
Dad gum neon lights lit the fuse,
This town is a lot of fun, but I've got leaving to get done,
Leaving with the Sin City Blues.

I stood up to say good-bye like all the rest.
And I heard him tell the warden just before he reached my cell.
Let my guitar playing friend do my request. (Let him....)

Chorus: Sing me back home, a song I used to hear,
Make my old memeories come alive.
Take me away, and turn back the years.
Sing me back home before I die.

I recall last Sunday morning, a choir from off the street.
Came in to sing a few old gospel songs.
And I heard him tell the singers, There' s a song my mama sang.
Can I hear it once before you move along?

And I've got to have you near,
But we just have to slip around,
And live in constant fear.

Chorus:
Oh, you're tied up with someone else,
And I'm all tied up too.
I know I've made mistakes dear,
But I'm so in love with you.

Snakes Crawl At Night

Written by -
Recorded by - Charlie Pride

Chords -

Chorus:
Oh the snakes crawl at night,
That's what they say,
When the sun goes down,
Then the snakes will play.

I watched that car pull right up into my driveway,
Saw a shadow slip away from my house,
So I hurried straight and looked in her room,
And I found out that it was my loving spouse.

Chorus:

So I waited in the shadows until morning,
And the gun I held was trembling in my hand,
No I did not plan to give them any warning,
For the devil on my shoulder had command.

Chorus:

Oh the trial in a little while was over,
And they sentenced me to die right away,
But before I leave this courtroom please your honour,
There's something more that I would like to say.

Chords -

Snow was falling when love came calling,
On this lonely heart of mine.
You were standing there with snow flakes in your hair.
You kept stalling while my thoughts were calling on every way I knew.
For one excuse to get acquainted with you.

Chorus:
Then I said snow flake, my pretty little snowflake.
Ooh Ooh the change in the weather has made it better for me.
Hey-ey-ey snow flake, my pretty little snow flake.
You've got me warm as a fire with a burning desire for you.

Ice was breaking and love was waking in a winter wonderland.
When I felt you slip your fingers in my hand.
Now snow is gleaming and I'm not dreaming, I know this is for real.
The love I have is too much to conceal.

Squaws Along The Yukon

Written by - Cam Smith
Recorded by - Hank Thompson

Chords - C

There's a Salmon-colored girl, who sets my heart awhirl,
Who lives along the Yukon far a-way.
Where the northern lights, they shine, she rubs her nose to mine,
She cuddles close and I can hear her say.

Chorus:
OOGA-OOGA MOOSHKA, which means that I love you.
If you will be my baby, I'll OOGA-OOGA MOOSHKA you.
Then I take her hand in mine, and set her on my knee,
The squaws along the Yukon, are good enough for me.

She makes her underwear, from hides of grizzly bears,
And bathes in ice cold water every day.
Her skin, I love to touch, but I just can't touch it much.
Because her fur-lined Parka’s in the way.

Chorus:

She's got the Air Corps down, the Sourdoughs hang around
Chechakos try to date her night and day.
With a landing gear that's fine, and a fusilage divine,
And a smile that you can see a mile away.

Chorus:

Carry me back to old Alaska.
The Squaws Along The Yukon are good enough for me.

Sudbury Saturday Night

Recorded by - Stompin' Tom Connors

Chords - C

Chorus: The girls are out to bingo and the boys are gettin' stinko,
And we think no more of Inco on a Sudbury Saturday night.
The glasses they will tinkle when our eyes begin to twinkle,
And we'll think no more of Inco on a Sudbury Saturday night.

With Irish Jim O'Connel there and Scotty Jack MacDonald,
There's honky Fredrick Hurchell gettin' tight, but that's alright,
There's happy German Fritzy there with Frenchy getting tipsy,
And even Joe the Gypsy knows it's Saturday tonight.

Now when Mary Ann and Mabel, come to join us at the table,
And tell us how the bingo went tonight, we'll look a fright.
But if they won the money, we'll be lappin' up the honey, boys,
'Cause everything is funny, for it's Saturday tonight.

Chorus:

We'll drink the loot we borrowed and recuperate tomorrow,
'Cause everything is wonderful tonight, we had a good fight,
We ate the dilly pickle and we forgot about the Nickel,
And everybody's tickled, for it's Saturday tonight.

The songs that we'll be singing, they might be wrong but they'll be ringing,
When the lights of town are shining bright, and we're all tight,
We'll get to work on Monday, but tomorrow's only Sunday,
And we're out to have a fun day for it's Saturday tonight.
Yeah

Chorus:

We'll think no more of Inco on a Sudbury Saturday night.

Step Aside

Written by -
Recorded by -

Chords -

Angry words were spoken,
And you turned and left me in a cloud of gloom,
I knew that when you took the car,
You'd drive until you found a saloon,
If some pretty woman there,
Starts over you and starts that burning glow,
Fight the urge to hold her tight,
Just walk away refuse her tell her no.

Step aside if she tries to get near you,
Block your heart if she starts making time,
Turn your head if she says that she needs you,
Step aside please don't step out of line.

Don't feel bitter baby,
Just because something that was said so cruel,
Stop before you go too far,
Control yourself don't turn into a fool,
Don't let her get too close to you,
'Cause if you do you won't be very strong,
Stop so you won't be sorry later on.

Step aside if she trys to get near you,
Block your heart if she starts making time,
Turn your head if she says that she needs you,
Step aside please don't step out of line.

Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down

Written by - Kris Kristofferson
Recorded by - Kris Kristofferson

Chords - Eb Ab Cm Bb7 Fm Fm7

Well I woke up Sunday mornin',
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,
So I had one more for dessert.
Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes,
And found my cleanest dirty shirt.
And I shaved my face and combed my hair,
And stumbled down the stair to meet the day.

I'd smoked my mind the night before,
With cigarettes and songs that I'd been pickin'.
But I lit my first and watched a small kid,
Playin' with a can that he was kickin'.
Then I walked across the street and caught,
The Sunday smell of someone fryin' chicken.
And it took me back to somethin',
That I'd lost somewhere along the way.

Chorus:
On a Sunday mornin' sidewalk,
Wishin' Lord that I was stoned.
'Cause there's something in a Sunday,
Makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothin' short of dyin',
Half as lonesome as the sound.
Of the sleeping city sidewalks,
And Sunday mornin' comin' down.

In the park I saw a daddy,
With a laughing little girl,
That he was swingin'.
And I stopped beside a Sunday School,
And listened to the song that they were singin'.
Then I headed down the street,
And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringin'.
And it echoed thru the canyon,
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.

Chorus:

Chords - G

This old smoke filled bar is something I'm not used to,
But I gave up my home to see you satisfied.
And I just called to let you know where I'll be living.
It's not much but I feel welcome here inside.

Chorus:
And I've got swingin' doors, a jukebox, and a bar stool.
My new home has a flashing neon sign.
Stop by and see me anytime you want to.
' Cause I'm always here at home 'till closing time.

I've got everything I need to drive me crazy.
And I've got everything it takes to lose my mind.
And in here the atmosphere's just right for heartaches.
And thanks to you I'm always here 'till closing time.

Tennessee Flat Top Box

Written by -
Recorded by - Rosanne Cash

Chords - A
Turnarond - D - A

In a little cabaret in a south Texas border town,
Sat a boy and his guitar, and the people came from all around,
And all the girls, from there to Austin,
Were slippin' ' way from home and puttin' jewelry in hock,
To take a trip, to go and listen,
To the little dark-haired boy who played the Tennessee flat top box,
And he would play...
Turnaround:

Well he couldn't ride or wrangle, and he never cared to make a dime,
But give him his guitar, and he'd be happy all the time,
And all the girls, from nine to ninety,
Were snappin' fingers, tappin' toes, and begging him, don't stop,
And hypnotized and fascinated,
By the little dark-haired boy, who played the Tennessee flat top box,
And he would play...
Turnaround:

Then one day he was gone, and no one ever saw him 'round,
He vanished like the breeze, they forgot him in the little town,
But all the girls, still dreamed about him,
They hung around the cabaret, until the doors were locked,
And then one day, on the hit parade,
Was a little dark-haired boy who played the Tennessee flat top box.
And he would play...

Thank God I'm A Country Boy

Written by - John Martin Sommers
Recorded by - John Denver

Chords - A D G E7

Well, life on a farm is kinda laid back,
Ain't much an old country boy like me can't hack,
It's early to rise, early in the sack, Thank God I'm a country boy.
A simple kinda life never did me no harm,
Raisin' me a family and workin' on a farm,
My days are all filled with an easy country charm,
Thank God I'm a country boy.

Chorus:
Well I got me a fine wife,
I got my old fiddle,
When the sun's comin' up,
I got cakes on the griddle,
And life ain't nothin' but a funny, funny riddle,
Thank God I'm a country boy.

When the work's all done and the sun's settin low,
I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow,
But the kids are asleep so I keep it kinda low,
Thank God I'm a country boy.
I'd play "Sally Goodin'" all day if I could,
But the Lord and my wife wouldn't take it very good,
So I fiddle when I can and I work when I should,
Thank God I'm a country boy.

Chorus:

I wouldn't trade my life for diamonds or jewels,
I never was one of them money hungry fools,
I'd rather have my fiddle and my farmin' tools,
Thank God I'm a country boy.
Yeah, city folk drivin' in a black limousine,
A lotta sad people thinkin' that's mighty keen,
Well, folks let me tell you now exactly what I mean,
I thank God I'm a country boy.

Chorus:

Well my fiddle was my daddy's till the day he died,
And he took me by the hand and held me close to his side,
He said, "Live a good life and play my fiddle with pride,
And thank God your a country boy.
My daddy taught me young how to hunt and how to whittle,
He taught me how to work and play a tune on the fiddle,
He taught me how to love and how to give just a little,
Thank God I'm a country boy.

That's what you get for lovin' me,
That's what you get for lovin' me,
Well ev'ry thing you had is gone,
As you can see,
That's what you get for lovin' me.

I ain't the kind to hang around,

So don't be blue,

Now, there you go you're cryin' again,
But then, some day, when your poor heart,

The Fightin' Side Of Me

Written by -
Recorded by - Merle Haggard

Chords -

I hear people talkin' bad about the way we have to live here in this country.
Harpin' on the wars we fight and grippin' 'bout the way things ought'a be.
And I don't mind them switchin' sides and standin' up for things that they believe in.
When they're runnin' down my country, man they're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

Chorus: Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me.
Runnin' down the way of life, our fightin' men have fought and died to keep.
If you don't love it leave it, let this song that I'm singin', be a warnin'.
If you're runnin' down my country man, You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

I read about some squirrely guy who claims that he just don't believe in fightin'.
And I wonder just how long, the rest of us can count on bein' free.
They love our milk and honey, but they preach about some other way of livin'.
When they're runnin' down my country, hoss, they're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

The Old Lamplighter

Chorus:
He made the night a little brighter,
Wherever he would go,
The old lamplighter of long, long ago.
His snowy hair was so much whiter,
Beneath the candle's glow,
The old lamp lighter,
Of long, long ago.

Verse:
You'd hear the patter of his feet,
As he came toddling down the street,
His smile would hide a lonely jeart you see,
If there were sweethearts in the park,
He'd pass a lamp and leave it dark,
Remembering the days that used to be,
For he re-calls when dreams were new,
He loved someone who loved him too,
Who walks with him alone in memory.

Recorded by - Charlie Rich

Chords - C

Hey did you happen to see,
The most beautiful girl in the world?
And if you did was she crying, crying?
Hey if you happen to see,
The most beautiful girl that walked out on me,
Tell her I'm sorry,
Tell her I need my baby,
Won't you tell her that I love her.

I woke up this morning,
And realized what I had done,
I stood alone in the cold grey dawn,
I knew I'd lost my morning sun,
I lost my head and I said some things,
Now comes the heartaches that the morning brings,
I know I'm wrong and I couldn't see,
I let my world slip away from me.

So hey did you happen to see,
The most beautiful girl in the world?
And if you did was she crying, crying?
Hey if you happen to see,
The most beautiful girl that walked out on me,
Tell her I'm sorry tell her I need my baby.
Won't you tell her that I love her.

Chords - F

There she goes,
She's walking a way,
Each step she takes,
Brings heartache my way,
He won her heart,
I lost her some way,
There she goes,
She's walkin' away.

Chorus:
If I hadn't cheated,
If I hadn't lied,

She's walkin' away,
There she goes.

Written by - Johnny Cash
Recorded by - Johnny Cash 1956

Chords - A

Intro:
You're gonna break another heart, you're gonna tell another lie.

Well here I am and there you go, you're gone again.
I know you're gonna be the way you've always been.
Breakin' hearts and tellin' lies is all you know.
Another guy gives you the eye and there you go.

Chorus:
There you go, you're gone again.
I should have know, I couldn't win.
There you go, you're by his side.
You're gonna break another heart,
You're gonna tell another lie.

Because I love you so I take much more than I should take.
I want you even though I know my heart is gonna break.
You built me up and for a while I'm all a-glow.
Then your fickle heart sees someone else and there you go.

There's A Tear In My Beer

Written by - Hank Williams Sr.
Recorded by - Hank Williams Sr. & Jr.

Chords - C

There's a tear in my beer 'cause I'm cryin' for you dear,
You were on my lonely mind,
Into these past few beers I've shed a million tears,
You were on my lonely mind.
I'm gonna keep drinkin' until I'm petrified,
And then maybe these, tears will leave my eyes.

There's a tear in my beer,
'Cause I'm cryin' for you dear,
You were on my lonely mind.

Last night I walked the floor and the night before,
You were on my lonely mind,
It seems my life is through and I'm so doggone blue,
You were on my lonely mind,
I'm gonna deep drinkin' 'til I can't feel a toe,
And then maybe my heart, won't hurt me so.

There's a tear in my beer,
'Cause I'm cryin' for you dear,
You were on my lonely mind,

Short break.....

Cause I've cried and I've cried my tears I can't hide,
You are on my lonely mind,
All these blues I have found have really got me down,
You are on my lonely mind,
I'm gonna keep on drinkin' 'til I can't even think,
'Cause in the last week I ain't slep' a wink.

There's a tear in my beer,
'Cause I'm cryin' for you dear,
You were on my lonely mind,
You were on my lonely mind.

But just beyond the door, here's what you will find,

This White Circle

Chords -

This white circle on my finger means were through,
A reminder of my wasted years with you,
I took off my ring and placed it out of site,
But it won't keep me from missing you tonight.

This white circle on my finger shows I'm free,
I'm not sure if that's the way I want to be,
Loving you might be a habit I can break,
What a difference this small white circle makes.

This white circle will start fading with the time,
And I hope someday I'll have you off my mind,
One white circle tells of two who had to part,
And it's love has left its mark upon my heart.

This white circle on my finger shows I'm free,
I'm not sure if that's the way I want to be,
Loving you might be a habit I can break,
What a difference this small white circle makes.

Chords - D A G

I can see what your lookin' to find in the smile on my face,
In my peace of mind and my state of grace,
I send what I can to the man from the ministry,
Its a part of heaven's plan and he talks to me,
Now I send what I can to the man with the diamond ring,
It's a part of heaven's plan and he sure can sing,
Now its all I can afford but the lord has sent eternity,
It's to save the little children in a poor country.

Chorus:
Got my ticket to heaven and everlasting life,
Got a ride all the way to paradise,
I got my ticket to heaven and everlasting life,
All the way to paradise.

Now there's nothin' left for luxurys, nothin' left to pay my heat and bills,
But the good Lord will provide, I know he will,
So send what you can to the man with the diamond ring,
They're tunin' in across the land to hear him sing.

Too Many Highways

Written by - Merle Haggard/Max D. Barnes
Recorded by - Merle Haggard

Chords -

She whispered I love you,
And come back to me,
As I climbed up inside of this old Diamond T,
I could have been a doctor or lawyer by trade,
But that ain't the choice that I made.

The life of a skinner,
Gets under your skin,
Too many highways and I'm leavin again,
She could of been famous up on screen or on stage,
But that ain't the choice that she made.

Chorus:
Too many highways,
Too many byways,
Too many canyons,
And too many turns,
Too many bright lights,
Too many long nights,
And she's one bridge I don't want to burn.

I hate to leave her,
With tears in her eyes,
The longer I leave her the harder she cries,
Drivin' beats workin' but driving's a chore,
And I don't have a choice any more.

Like snow on a mountain,
And ice on the curves,
Leaving her lonely is sure hell on the nerves,
If I can't take her with me,
I can't pull the load,
A man needs a friend on the road.

Repeat chorus:

A song trying to describe a situation which might have caused the first truck driving team of the opposite sex.

Chords -

The truck driver's blues,
A blues you can't lose,
If you ain't drivin',
Through mountains and valleys,
And backing through alleys too small.
Got the truck driver's blues,
The kind you can't lose,
If you ain't movin',
And huggin' the white line,
And makin' you some kind of haul.

Chorus:
I got no one to blame,
Cause I love the four lanes I'm on,
I've got the heart of a gypsy,
And the soul of a vagabond.

And I've got them truck driver's blues,
The kind you can't lose,
If you ain't doggin' and loggin',
And pullin' a double,
Or draggin' a trailer too tall.

Oh I got these truck driver's blues,
The kind you can't lose,
If you ain't drivin',
Through mountains and valleys,
And backin' through alleys too small,
And huggin' the white line and ,
Making you some kind of haul.

Honey I'm missin' you and I'm singin' the truck driver's blues.

Chords -

I can tell you're really glad I'm finally leaving,
I know things for you will change from bad to good,
If you don't mind I think I'll just pack my suitcase,
And just walk away from you the way I should,
But if anyone should wonder where I've gone,
If anyone should ask from time to time,
Tell 'em that you finally drove me crazy,
And I'm somewhere untanglin' my mind.

Chorus:
Tell 'em I won't be riding I'll be walking,
I don't think no crazy man should drive,
Anyway the car belongs to you babe,
Remember I love you,
As long as I'm alive.

But if anyone should wonder where I've gone,
If anyone should ask from time to time,
Hey, tell 'em that you finally drove me crazy,
And I'm somewhere untanglin' my mind.

Listen to the jingle, the rumble and the roar.
As she rides along the woodland, through the hills and by the shore.
Hear the mighty rush of the engine, hear the lonesome hobo call.
She's travellin' through the jungle on the Wabash Cannonball.

She came down from Burmingham,
One cold December day,
As she pulled into the station,
You could hear all the people say,

She's long and she's tall,
She's a combination called,

Waitin' For A Train

Written by -
Recorded by - Jimmy Rogers

Chords - C

All around the water tank,
Waitin' for a train,
A thousand miles away from home,
Sleepin' in the rain.

I walked up to a freightman,
To give him a line of talk,
He said if you've got money,
I'll see that you don't walk.

I haven't got a nickel,
Not a penny can I show,
Get off get off you railroad bum,
And he slammed the boxcar door.

He put me off in Texas,
A state I dearly love,
Wide open spaces all around me,
The moon and stars up above.

Nobody seems to want me,
Or to lend a helping hand,
I'm on my way from Frisco,
Going back to Dixieland.

My pocket book is empty,
My heart is full of pain,
I'm a thousand miles away from home,
Waitin' for a train.

Chorus:

Walkin' the floor over you.

Now darlin', you know I love you well,
I love you, more than I can tell,
I thought that you loved me, and always would be mine,
But you went away and left me, with troubles on my mind.

Walk On By

Written by - Kendall Hayes
Recorded by - Leroy Van Dyke

Chords - G

If I see you tomorrow on some street in town,
Pardon me if I don't say hello,
I belong to another, it wouldn't look so good,
To know someone I'm not supposed to know.

Chorus:
Just walk on by, wait on the corner,
I love you but we're strangers when we meet,
Just walk on by, wait on the corner,
I love you but we're strangers when we meet.

In a dimly lit corner in a place outside of town,
Tonight we'll try to say good-bye again,
But I know it's not over, I'll call tomorrow night,
I can't let you go, so why pretend?

Chorus:

Walkin' After Midnight

Written by -

Recorded by - Patsy Cline

Chords - F

I go out walkin',
After midnight,
Out in the starlight,
Just like we used to do,
I'm always walkin',
After midnight,
Searchin' for you.

I walk for miles,
Along the highway,
Well that's just my way,
Of sayin' I love you,
I'm always walkin',
After midnight,
Searchin' for you.

Chorus:
I stop to see a weeping willow,
Cryin' on his pillow,
Maybe he's cryin' for me.
And as the sky turns gloomy,
Night winds whisper to me,
I'm lonesome as I can be.

I go out walkin',
After midnight,
Out in the moonlight,
Just a-hopin'you may be,
Somwhere a-walkin',
After midnight,
Searchin' for me.

Chorus:

Chords - C

You left me and you went away,
You said that you'd be back in just a day,
You've broken your promise and you left me here alone,
I don't know why you did dear, but I do know that you're gone.

Chorus:
I'm walkin'the floor over you,
I can't sleep a wink that is true.
I'm hoping and I'm praying, as my heart breaks right in two,
Walkin' the floor over you.

I love you, more than I can tell,
I thought that you loved me, and always would be mine,
But you went away and left me, with troubles on my mind.

Waltz Across Texas

Written by -
Recorded by - Ernest Tubb

Chords - G

When we dance together, my world's in disguise,
It's a fairy-land tale that's come true.
And when you look at me, with those stars in your eyes.
I could waltz across Texas with you.

Chorus:
Waltz across Texas, with you in my arms,
Waltz across Texas with you.
Like a story-book ending, I'm lost in you charms.
And I could waltz across Texas with you.

My heartaches and troubles are just up and gone.
The moment, that you come in view.
And with your hand in mine dear, I could dance on and on,
I could waltz, across Texas with you.

Chorus:

Watermelon Wine

Written by - Tom T. Hall
Recorded by - Tom T. Hall

Chords - G - Am

I was sitting in Miami, pouring blended whisky down,
When this old grey black gentleman, was cleaning up the lounge.
There wasn’t anyone around, but this old man and me.
The guy who ran the bar was watching Ironsides on TV.
Un-invited he sat down and opened up his mind,
On old dogs and children, and watermelon wine.

“Ever had a drink of watermelon wine”, he asked?
He told me all about it, though I didn’t answer back.
Ain’t but three things in life that’s worth a solitary dime.
That’s old dogs and children, and watermelon wine.

He said, “Women think about themselves, when menfolk aren’t around,
And friends are hard to find when they discover that you’re down”.
He said, “I tried it all when I was young, and in my natural prime”.
Now it’s old dogs and children, and watermelon wine.

He said, “Old dogs care about you, even when you make mistakes”.
God bless little children, while the’re still too young to hate.
As he moved away I got my pen and copied down that line,
On old dogs and children, and watermelon wine.

I had to catch a plane up to Atlanta that next day.
As I left for my room I saw him picking up my change.
That night I dreamed in peaceful sleep of shady summer times,
Of old dogs and children, and watermelon wine.

We Ain't Out Of Love Yet

Written by -
Recorded by - Randy Travis

Chords - Db Gb B7 E Ab A A#

You can throw away my picture, empty out my dresser drawer,
Break up all the dishes change the lock on my door,
But you can't erase my memory no matter how you try,
It don't mean it's over just because you said goodbye.
Sorry if I hurt you but you made me so mad,
If I don't care about you why do I feel so bad,
We're almost out of sugar and our matches got wet,
But we ain't out of love yet.

We ain't out of love yet,
Let's not do something hasty baby that we'll regret,
Our loving cup ain't empty, there's still plenty left,
And we ain't out of love yet.

We may run out of gas and be left out in the rain,
Could run out of cigarettes and money again,
A little out of touch or just plain out of our heads,
But we ain't out of love yet.

We ain't out of love yet,
Let's not do something hasty baby that we'll regret,
Our loving cup ain't empty, there's still plenty left,
And with just a little mending, we can have a happy ending,
Lets forgive and forget,
We don't need a lawyer now, we just need a rest,
And we can get back into doing, what we do best,
Was Scarlet ever through with Rett,
You can't give up a perfect set,
And we ain't out of love yet.

We Must Have Been Out Of Our Mind

Written by - Melba Montgomery
Recorded by - George Jones & Melba Montgomery

Chords - D

We said our goodbyes so long ago,
Never thinking we'd miss each other so.
All the memories we can't leave behind,
Oh, we must have been out of our minds.

Chorus:
I thought I loved another, not you,
How foolish I thought the same too.
They both turned out to be the wrong kind,
Oh, we must have been out of our minds.

Let's forgive and forget the past we known,
And reap together the wild seeds we've sown.
Surely they can forgive us and find,
That, we must have been out of our minds.

Chorus:

Tag:
Yes, we must have been out of our min-nds.

What Have You Got Planned For Tonight Diana

Written by - Merle Haggard
Recorded by - Merle Haggard

Chords - D

Spoken:
I remember it all started in 1929 when me and Diana came to Alaska to homestead some of this free government land.

Forty miles from the nearest gravel road.
We cut our life in the Ponderosa pines.
We sweated hard to beat the winter snow.
But the cabin's up and we got lots of time.

Chorus:
What have you got planned tonight Diana?
Would you consider lying in my arms?
I love you more than ever now Diana.
I'm sure you're the reason I was born.

Jim was born the first year we were here.
Look at him my God he's almost grown.
The baby's in the cradle fast asleep.
Just think in no time he'll be up and gone.

Chorus:

Spoken:
Well time sure does fly, doesn't it Diana?
It's been almost two years now since, since you've been gone.
Speaking of time, I guess you know uh mine's about up.
I'm going to see you tonight just another breath or two and I'll be home.
By the way...

When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again

Written by - Wiley Walker & Gene Sullivan
Recorded by - Bill Monroe

Chords - A

Memories, that linger in my heart,
Memories, that make my heart grow cold,
Someday, we'll live them all again,
When my blue moon again will turn to gold.

Chorus:
When my blue moon turns to gold again,
When the rainbow turns the clouds away,
When my blue moon turns to gold again,
You'll be back, within my arms to stay.

The castles, we built in dreams together,
Tell the sweetest, story ever told,
Someday, we'll live them all again,
When my blue moon, again will turn to gold.

Chorus:

The lips that used to thrill me so,
Your kisses, were meant for only me.
Someday, we'll live them all again,
When my golden moon is just a memory.

When You Fall In Love Everything's A Waltz

Written by - Ed Bruce, Ron Peterson & Patsy Bruce
Recorded by - Ed Bruce

Chords -

We don't dance the two-step anymore
All we need's a small part of the floor
The band can go on playing almost anything it wants
When you fall in love everything's a waltz

Eyes are meant for looking into
Way up close
Arms were meant for holding
What you want the most
Lips were meant to say what bodies
Feel down in their hearts
When you fall in love
Everything's a waltz. **************************************************************************************

Why Me?

Written by - Kris Kristofferson
Recorded by - Kris Kristofferson

Chords - G Bm Am

Why me Lord? What have I ever done,
To deserve even one of the pleasures I've known,
Tell me Lord, what did I ever do that was worth loving you,
Or the kindness you've shown?

Chorus:
Lord help me Jesus I've wasted it,
So help me Jesus I know what I am,
But now that I know that I've needed you,
So help me Jesus, my soul's in your hands.

Try me Lord, if you think there's a way,
I can try to repay all I've taken from you,
Maybe Lord, I can show someone else,
What I've been through myself,
On my way back to you.

Chorus:
Jesus my soul's in your hands.

Wildwood Flower

Written by - A.P.Carter
Recorded by - The Carter Family

Chords - D

Oh, I'll twine with my mingles and waving black hair.
With the roses so red and the lilies so fair.
And the myrtle so bright with the emerald hue.
The pale and the leader and eyes look like blue.

Oh I'll dance, I will sing and my laugh shall be gay.
I will charm every heart, in his crown I will sway.
When I 'woke from my dreaming, my idol was clay.
All portion of love had all flown away.

Oh he taught me to love him and promised to love.
And to cherish me over all others above.
How my heart is now wond'ring no mystry can tell.
He's left me no warning, no words of farewell.

Oh, he taught me to love him and called me his flower.
That was blooming to cheer him through life's dreary hour.
Oh, I long to see him and regret the dark hour.
He's gone and neglected this pale wildwood flower.

Wildwood Weed

Written by - Jim Stafford
Recorded by - Jim Stafford

Chords - C

The wildwood flower grew wild on the farm,
And we never knowed what it was called,
Some said it was a flower, some said it was a weed,
I didn't give it much thought.

One day I was out there talking to my brother,
And I reached down for a weed to chew on,
And things got fuzzy, and things got blurry,
Then everything was gone.
I didn't know what happened,
But I knew it beat the hell out of sniffin' burlap.

I came too and my brother was there,
And he said, "Boy what's wrong with your eyes?"
I said,"I don't know I was chewing on a weed",
He said, "Let me give it a try".

We spent the rest of that day and most of that night,
Tryin' to find my brother Bill.
Caught up with him about six o'clock the next morning,
Naked, sittin' on the windmill.
Said he flew up there, I had to climb up and get him down,
He was about half crazy.

The next day we picked a bunch of them weeds,
And put 'em in the sun to dry,
Then we mashed 'em up and cleaned 'em up,
And put 'em in a corncob pipe.

Smoking them wildwood flowers got to be a habit,
And we never seen no harm,
We thought it was kind of handy,
Take a trip and never leave the farm.
A big ol' puff of that wildwood weed,
Next thing you know you're wanderin' around,
Behind the little animals.

All good things got to come to an end,
It's the same with our wildwood weeds.
One day this feller from Washington came by and spied 'em,
And turned white as a sheet.

Well they dug and burned and they burned and dug.
And they killed all ou our cute little weed,
Then they drove away, we just smiled and waved,
Sittin' on that sack of seeds. Y'all come back now ya hear!

Willy and His Wife and Her Lover Lucy
Written by - Center Divide
Recorded by - Center divide

Chords - A

Willy and his wife
And his wife's lover, Lucy,
Were raising up a son,
On a farm outside of town.
Cross-legged on the porch,
They were meditating daily,
Busy blocking out a world
That was outside and upside down.

Living off the land
Had been a big dream of Willy's,
So he bought himself a plow
He ordered up some seeds.
But Willy was a prophet,
Not much of a farmer.
He didn't grow much corn
But he grew a lot of weeds.

And then one day
The Feds came knocking on the door.
Willy and his wife and her lover,
Were under arrest.
"We've got some pictures
Of your garden from the helicopter.
And Willy, your garden is a mess.
Yes Willy, your garden is a mess".

(chorus)
Oh no, I swear I did not know,
Pretty please, your honor, with all due respect.
The corn wouldn't grow
So I just let it go,
I didn't know I was breaking the law
Just left my garden in neglect.

The television network crews
Camped outside the courthouse.
The FBI agents
Hung out at Ma's Café.
Tie-dyes and bolo ties
Were filling up the square of town.
The whole nation tuning in
On the judgement day.

Courtroom hush,
Willy at the witness stand,
District attorney looks him
Right in the eye.
"Would you care to share with us
How could you be so oblivious.
That you could not see a jungle of that size?"
Willy replies,
"It's 'cause my hair was in my eyes".

(chorus)

Story behind the song
This song is based on a real story. A long-time college professor was caught growing Lots weed on his farm in Vermont. He claimed it was beyond his control and his long hair had even prevented him from seeing the enormity of his "garden."

Winds Of Change

Written by - Merle Haggard/Terry Hardesty
Recorded by - Merle Haggard

Chords -

With my ears I have heard the eagle call my name
He flew in from the night to talk to me
We talked about his freedom, he spoke with great concern
He said mother earth is aging rapidly

Chorus
He said the winds of change are blowin'
And the land is disappearing more each day
Farewell my son, I must be going
He turned and then forever flew away

With my eyes I have seen pretty mountain streams
Change from crystal clear to factory brown
The old bear shook his head and through his eyes he said
I guess there's no more salmon to be found

Chorus
He said the winds of change are blowin'
Telling me that I can't stay
Farewell my friend, I must be going
He turned and then forever walked away

I've lived in the land, where the wolf mistrusted me
He taught me that the stronger shall survive
Even in our world today, the weaker are the prey
But if we don't fight for the planet she will die

Chorus
And the winds of change keep blowin'
Yet we turn the other way
If we don't stop this wrong we're doing
Then mother earth will surely pass away

Wings Of A Dove

Written by - Bob Ferguson
Recorded by - Ferlin Husky

Chords - D

Chorus:
On the wings of a snow white dove.
He sent His pure sweet love.
A sign from a-bove.
On the wings of a dove.

When trouble surrounds us,
And evil comes.
The body grows weak,
The spirit grows numb.
When these things be-set us,
He doesn't for-get us.
He sends down His love,
On the wings of a dove.

Yesterday

Written by - John Lennon & Paul McCartney
Recorded by - Beatles

Chords - F Em7 A7 Dm Bb C

Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away,
Now it looks as though they're here to stay,
Oh I believe in yesterday.

Chorus:
Why she had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say,
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday,
Yesterday love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away, oh I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly I'm not half the man I used to be,
There's a shadow hanging over me,
Oh yesterday came suddenly.

Yesterday's Girl

Written by -
Recorded by - Hank Thompson

Chords - G

You told her lies, as her starry eyes, looked up in admiration.
You painted scenes, and lovely dreams, with all your temptation.
You spoke of things, like wedding rings, and promised her the world.
For no cause at all,you let her fall.
And now she’s a yesterday’s girl.

You think it’s smart, to lure the heart,
Of a girl whose lips you kiss.
Is it just a game, to add her name, to your broken hearted list.
You’ve loved some long, you’ve loved some wrong,
You promised each the world.
Each came to be, just a memory, and another yesterday’s girl.

Don’t you sometimes feel, that love is real,
The greatest thing in life.
Not one romance, you gave the chance, to be your cherished wife.
you cheat and lie, you make them cry, and promise each the world.
And one by one, they each become, another yesterday’s girl.

When autumn falls, and you recall, the things that might have been.
Then you’ll pause and see, you caused the grief, the grief that’s deep within.
When you’re old and love grows cold, I bet you’d give the world,
To just re-live, to take and give, the love of a yesterday’s girl.

You Ain't Woman Enough To Take My Man

Written by -
Recorded by - Loretta Lynn

Chords - D

You came to tell me something, you think that I should know.
That he don't love me anymore, and it's time for me to go.
You say your gonna take him, ah but I don't think you can.
'Cause you ain't woman enough, to take my man.

Chorus:
Women like you, there a dime a dozen,
You can buy 'em, anywhere.
For you to get to him, I'd have to move over,
And I'm gonna stand right here.
It'll be over my dead body,
So get out while you can.
'Cause you ain't woman enough, to take my man.

Sometimes a man goes lookin', for things that he don't need.
He took a second look at you, but he's in love with me.
I don't know where that leaves you, ah but I know where I stand.
And you ain't woman enough to take my man.

Chorus:

'Cause you ain't woman enough to take my man.

You Win Again

Written by - Hank Williams
Recorded by - Hank Williams

Chords - E

The news is out, all over town,
That you've been seen, a-runnin' 'round.
I know that I, should leave, but then,
I just can't go, you win again.

This heart of mine, could never see,
What ev'rybod-y knew but me.
Just trusting you, was my great sin,
What can I do, You win again.

I'm sorry for, your victim now,
'Cause soon his head, like mine will bow.
He'll give his heart, but all in vain,
And someday say, you win again.

You have no heart, you have no shame,
You take true love, and give the blame.
I guess that I, should not complain,
I love you still, you win again.

You're The Nearest Thing To Heaven

Written by - J. Cash, H. Johnson, C. Atkins
Recorded by - Johnny Cash

Chords - C

I have sailed the peaceful waters, of the ocean deep and blue,
I held my breath and watched the western sunset's golden hue.
I have flown above the mountain peaks, and valleys wide and green
But your the nearest thing to heaven that I've seen.

Chorus:
You're the nearest thing to heaven, yes you are.
I have searched for happiness, so long and far,
But my search for love was through,
The day that I found you,
'Cause you're the nearest thing to heaven, yes you are.

I confess that I've been tempted, by alluring magic charms,
When a smile was flashed my way, and stood before two open arms.
But I turned and walk away because I love you like I do.
You're the nearest thing to heaven, darling you.

Chorus:

I have watched the silver raindrops, fall to earth to cool the day,
Watched the rainbow, at twilight, when the clouds have blown away.
I love the pretty flowers, but they cannot vie your worth.
'Cause you're the nearest thing to heaven on this earth.

You'll toss around and call my name,
You'll walk the floor, the way I do,

Your cheatin' heart, will pine some day.
And crave the love, you threw away.
The time will come, when you'll be blue.
Your cheatin' heart, will tell on you.

Your Old Love Letters

Written by - Johnny Bond
Recorded by - Ricky Skaggs

Chords - E

Today I burned your old love letters
I burned them gently one by one
And as I light the flame I read it
So I could see what you had done

The first you wrote me was the sweetest
The last one broke my heart in two
Our love now lies among the embers
In the ashes of your letters tied in blue

As I burned your old love letters
It brought back memories from the past
It told about you and your new love
A love I knew could never last

The first you wrote me was the sweetest
The last one broke my heart in two
As I light the flame I read it
For I can say I still love you

You're The Reason

Written by -
Recorded by - Johnny Tillotson

Chords - C

I just lay here at night, toss and I turn,
Loving you so, how my heart yearns,
Honey, you're the reason I don't sleep at night.
Walkin' the floor, feelin' so blue, smoke cigarettes, drink coffee too,
Honey, you're the reason I don't sleep at night.

Chorus:
I'm bettin' you're not losin' sleep over me,
But if I'm wrong, don't fail to call,
Come over and keep me company.

Sometimes I go for a walk, take a look at the moon,
Strum my guitar, sing a love tune, honey,
You're the reason I don't sleep at night.

Chorus:
